First Impressions (Long)
I got my Galaxy Gray '06 a couple days ago and so far have put only 100 miles on the clock. (What can I say? Gas is just expensive here in LA.) I don't have pictures yet, and I can't promise when they're coming, but I will talk about my initial impressions of the car below:
Overall, I think the experience is the closest thing to driving a jet that you can ever get to. The engine is just so buttery smooth, though I fear that the mileage on this tank will be quite bad, as expected. The handling, as far as I can tell, is quite neutral and balanced, but so far it's only been LA metro driving; I need to take it into the mountains one of these days, but my initial impression is that the car will excel on the medium speed roads, and not do quite as well on the extremely tight ones that I used to run for the majority of my drives. The transmission is extremely direct and the throws are very nice and short, but it seems to clunk a bit into the lower gears. I'm hoping that's just the tranny being tight since it's brand new. The brakes I haven't quite tested yet, but from the moderate braking that I've used they seem to be pretty confidence inspiring.
The interior is a treat and I especially like it at night. To continue with the jet analogy, the back seats are like economy class, certainly not the most comfortable of places, but a very unique experience nonetheless. The freestyle doors have proven themselves to be very cool and I love them, even though they were viewed as quite unnecessary when I was first shopping for the car. Finally, the styling is growing on me, though the C-pillar area I still think is a bit messy. However, the Galaxy Gray is a gorgeous color, a menacing dark gray at night, and a cool light blue-gray in direct sunlight.

My friend said it best when he stated that the RX-8 is one of the few cars with character left in the world today. When you're driving or in a RX-8, you know its a RX-8 and wouldn't mistake it for anything else. The same can't be said for the multitude of other cars and even "sports cars" today. It's simply unique.

They are like jets, and they kinda sound like it, drive like it, and drink gas like it.
As for the c-pillar, look at the Rx-7 (SA/FB, 1st-gen) and it'll all be clear..
Welcome to the rotary madness.. there is no cure. Well, maybe a quad-cam italian-made twelve-banger, but that's a touch extreme, money-wise...

that wasnt long- where is the long post?
and i thinkyou'll find that the car does exceptionally well on the tight roads- like 1 going north out of frisco hehehehe THATS FUN!! (almost had to pull over cause the wife thought she might puke hehehhehehe)

Let's make it quite clear, I wish it was a few hundred pounds lighter, but as it is I would not get anywhere near that number unless I wanted a fully stripped out racecar. Losing a few hundred pounds would involve losing probably 10 inches of wheelbase, the rear seats, and the freestyle doors. In other words, it would be a completely new car. Still, I can dream.

if u're hoping to lose a few pounds so u can increase ur power to weight ratio....
it's usually better to just increase ur power than to lose weight IMO. the rx8's special because it offers the level of performance as well as comfort/practicality....don't kill the latter in attempt to lose weight....
just wait for a more effective turbo kit to come out, slap it on and call it a day
now if u're talkin about losing weight so u can turn faster...do some suspension mods and the car should handle pretty darn well for u already.
outta curiousity what was ur previous car?

As to my obsession with lightweight, it's not really a means to an end, but almost an end to itself. Lightweight is the holy grail of racecar designers, and having done that the past few years I am definitely looking for ways to make the car light. Turbos increase your straight line speed, suspension helps your lateral gs, bigger brakes stop you better. Lighter weight does all of that. However, I definitely won't be sacrificing the civility of the car in the interest of lightweight.
My previous car was a 2001 Subaru Impreza 2.5RS.

You won't lose much weight off the 8 unofortunately... It's about as light as you can get it without having a stripped out interior.
You can save a few pounds in the wheels and battery though.
If you have the packages, they add about 100 pounds or so to the total weight.

Then consider that cars are much heavier now than they once were, it was probably pretty tought to find a Japanese cars much over 3000lbs just a decade ago. I know my big ole Maxima with a V6 weighed less than 3000lbs. Even sedans like the Evo and WRX/STI with heavy AWD systems and close to 300hp weighed less than 3000lbs not long ago.
