miles to warm up

Tried searching, did not find a satisfactory answer. Maybe I just dont have this search thing down yet.

New 07 owner. The motor has a lot of oil in it. How many miles does it take to warm up the oil to operating temp with say average driving in about 80 degree weather? In other words, how far before you can drive the crap out of this car.

Of course if my temp gauge was an actual temp "gauge" then I would have some idea.

My friends C6 Vette has a digital readout of oil temp. This was nice. One of the mod's I plan on doing is installing an oil temp guage. Day to day driving this may not be necessary, but I like to know whats going on under the hood.

Thanks

p.s. the more I drive this car, the more I like it

here's an easy method:
once the temp guage has gotten to roughtly the mid-point, the engine is warm. From there, wait 5 minutes and then you can drive it like you stole it.

hmm i go through my neighborhood loop which is 3 miles which i think is sufficient enough to go beat on it since i see the temp slowly rising. So i say 5-10 mins of driving casually and then when the temp reaches the mid way point.....i get on it.

That's my biggest complaint about the car. For a sports car, the 8 is under-instrumented.

I will never baby a car, if it can't handle it, it is gone.

It's a slow (25 mph speed limit )2.5 mile drive to the freeway from my house. By the time I get there, my 8 is at it's operating temperature. Maybe 5 - 7 minute drive.

Like others have said, let the tempt hit the middle, then wait 5-7 minutes and you can drive it as hard as you want and you'll be safe

The temp gauge is telling you the water temperature, and not the engine oil. Even though the water/coolant might be in the normal range after 5 or so minutes, the oil is nowhere near warmed up- that takes roughly 25 or 30 minutes.
