you have to restart the car.
you turn DSC off just by press it once. holding it will make the computer think theres a problem with the switch and show a warning light.

Just KOKO real quick while rolling in gear...as long as you are not in a curve or close traffic.

I've always wondered what is the point of holding it 5 seconds? How is that different than just pressing once?

It's in the manual.

pressing once turns off the stability control. Holding it down until the light turns on, on the dash, turns off the traction control as well. It DOES NOT mean the car thinks there is something wrong.

Ok, so it's not a "feature", and there's no point to holding it down.

Bro, 5 seconds without (what little the OMP sees fit to ration out to begin with) OMP injection won't hurt the engine one tiny bit. You realize there is little to no injection on deceleration anyway, right? As far as the engine is concerned, key off in gear is just normal deceleration...no fuel, no combustion. The main mechanical oil pump continues to turn of course as it is shaft driven.

I think my manual says that too, I'll have to double check.

Maybe it's different for series I and II.

Hm. That's totally different then what my manual says on the subject. Maybe they wrote it up differently in the '09 manuals to dissuade people from using it.

I do know the car performs fine with it turned off. I would not recommend turning it off on the street unless you're stuck in the snow. There's no reason to not having it on driving around on the street as it's a really solid safety net that still lets you have fun.

You do know people have been driving cars without DSC and TCS for about 75 years now, right? IT's not like you will spontaneously run into a ditch if you turn it off.

rx8 has very werid torque curve tho, nothing below 4000rpm, then alot betweem 5000-7000rpm. can be a bit scary when in the rain with DSC turned off.

Of course. But just like anti-lock brakes, seatbelts, and the airbag it's a safety feature there is no reason to go without on the street.

Reverse that at least. You can tap the button and spin the rear tires all day long. (Traction control gone)

You can also tap the button and get completely sideways, spin out, etc... (Stability control gone)

Through any of the testing and such I have done, I have found nothing that the system left active with the tap off that it turned off with the hold down. Even ABS stays active in both.

One theory is that with a tap off, if you slide for more than <x> distance or <y> time, then it will finally recover you, but I doubt it, since I have spent ~20 seconds sideways in the snow with rear tires spinning with just a tap off and it never kicked in for anything. 20 seconds is plenty to be wrapped around a tree.

Agreed. How many of the accidents from those 75 years could have been avoided with a DSC/TCS?

It's like an air bag.

You don't need it every day. Hopefully you won't even need it every year. But that once that it goes off, you sure as hell need it.

The DSC/TCS is a safety net that you can spend your entire life staying away from where it triggers, but even if it triggers once and saves your car and possibly your life, if not also the life and property of someone else, doesn't it make that worth keeping on for day to day driving?

They call them accidents for a reason. You don't know it's coming.

Most of the time my DSC has saved me, it was saving me from myself. I'll freely admit it. But I still have my car, my health, and my life because of it. I'd be without one or all due to my own stupidity many times over by now.

And the one time that I had nothing to do with it, oil was all over my lane on the highway, in the rain.

Yeah. I drive with it on. It's worth it.

Pardon my darker point of view but I am biased against the word, and rather call them "wrecks", or "f&ck-ups" because somewhere someone screwed up.
