When starting your RX-8, do any of you use the gas pedal, or do you keep your foot off of it. Mine only has 900 miles on it, but I've noticed it seems to start a little better if I give it just a little gas when I'm starting it. If I don't, it starts, but seems a little lazy in doing so.

I don't use gas at startup, I haven't noticed any laziness. Could this be flash related?

when i start the car. i don't give gas to it. i guess i know y when u starting ur car. u give a little bit gas to it. will make it better. cuz(maybe) u havn't warm up ur car well. if u warm up it well. i think that's no matter u give gas or not. try to warm it up untill the water temperature up to the middle of it.(it a little bit longer. but just want u to try when the car warm up fully.the car will running better as u did(give gas)) actually u just need to wait about 2 or 3min then u good to go.if u like i can wait a little bit longer it will better for u car.

No. I turn the key to the "On" position and pause there for 3-5 seconds then start it. No problems.

I've never given the gas while starting it. My car always starts up after about 1-2 cranks, except for one time when it took about 5...

Only if I want to flood it. Turn the key on and wait until the fuel pump runs up the pressure a bit - couple seconds. Then turn it over.

Ever since fuel injection has been around, pushing the gas pedal is not required. I never have touched the gas pedal at start up on any car that is fuel injected.

I am in the habit because of my diesel,and it's "wait to start light" to turn the key on and wait a few seconds before I start it.I sometimes catch myself and say "hey dummy you don't have to wait".I know I don't even have to wait for the light in my diesel during this time of year but like I said it is a habit.I do this with every car not just my RX-8.I have been driving this oil burner too long.

Never touch the gas pedal to start the car - even in cold weather in winter.
Carburated cars required that you prime the engine, much like a lawn mower.
Fuel injected cars need to be primed as well, so just turn the key to the acc position. When the chimes stop, then crank the engine. But never prime engine with pedal.
At least that's what I've been told.

no gas when starting. just dont do it. however you should do what everyone else is saying-turn to on then wait a few seconds then to start. i call this initialising(do a search with that word and you will find several posts about it) i have modified my "initialising" method- i dont turn it then do nothing for the few seconds. i dont even listen to the pumping noises now. i just get in, turn the key to "on" then put on my seat belt and adjust my seating position, then i start. this fumbling with the seat belt/getting comfortable moment takes enough time.

If my understanding of fuel injection cars is correct, pressing the "gas" pedal actually adds air--not gas--to the system. In the bad ol' days of carburetors, the gas pedal actually primed the system and was essential.

I dont start my rx8. I want to keep this beauty in the garage and not even lay a finger on it. Just kidding. No, I just hold the clutch down when starting the car and it starts just fine. How many of you start the car in the 1st gear as opposed to starting it in neutral?

I've always started mine in the 1st gear.

I start in neutral. If I put it into first or reverse, I sometimes forget and let off the clutch soon as the car start up, causing me to get quite a shock.

yeah mine is brand new too, and sometimes she sounds truly lazy when starting. It's a bit troubling.

Remember that the RX-8 uses a throttle-by-wire system, so there is no physical cable connection between the gas pedal and the throttle plates. Starting with the throttle pedal depressed may or may not do anything, depending on how the car's ECU is programmed. If the ECU senses that the engine is not running, it might not enable any fuel injection or throttle functions until it senses some crank motion. That means stepping on the pedal won't add gas or open up the throttle plates in this case.

However, once you start kicking the starter while stepping on the gas pedal, you run the risk of pre/over-revving a motor that might not be sufficiently lubricated. Part of the motor's lubrication system is also controlled by the ECU, so prior to cranking the engine there will be no oil injection. At that point, you want to keep the rpm relatively low, until proper oil pressure and temperature are achieved.

In other words, starting with gas pedal down is unneccessary and possibly detrimental to your engine's health.


I've gotten 320 on a tank, but then again that particular "tank" was 15 gallons. Normally I get 260 per 13 gallon fill. The MPG is roughly the same.

You shoud never press the gas pedal on fuel injected cars as fuel is metered at a predetermined rate upon startup by the ECU. This is helped by the electric fuel pump and it's high operating pressure.

I think that people using the gas pedal is one of the reasons our 8 is so prone to flooding. When you depress the gas the car is injecting more fuel than needed and will stutter and stall if it is not warmed up.

We only had to pump the gas pedal on startup for carburated enginse because of a device called an accelerator pump which was used to squirt fuel into the engine.
