I think it'd be great if Mazda could figure a way to add the Rotary engine to other cars like the Miata, the new Cosmo, or the upcoming MX Tourer [kind of like a Matrix if I'm not mistaken]. I'm sure it'd be tuned down, like the European version rumored @ 192hp. Hopefully they can make this engine like Nissan's VQ35 series and start saving money [mass production etc etc].
I know some of you mentioned a truck. What about 3 rotors for a truck? It could have somewhere around 243 pounds of torque. That is enough for a light truck. They use the same parts as the 2 rotor version don't they? so it should not cost much more in R&D or parts.
I'd get a new Renesis powered truck if Mazda started selling them. I've got a '74 REPU and love it. The new 'REPU' would do very well with a 3 rotor '20Bish' engine. Very well!
actually, a 3 rotor motor would definitely be very different from a 2 rotor, and not just "another added on"...
there's more to adding another intermediate housing, and having a longer eccentric shaft, there's issues with the centre rotor (the outer gear among other things), cooling, size, (block) strength, all kinds of crap i can't predict (as i'm not an engineer, just a freak about engineering...)
but yes, if it was done it would kick serious ***... when you do the displacement conversions (correcting its 2 stroke power delivery by doubling its displacement to compare with a 4 stroke piston...), it'd be like a 4.0L "9 cylinder"... think about the power (way over 300 hp... i'd guess like 340 - 360 ish, but that might be a bit optimistic) and torque of an engine of that displacement (not to mention super small physical size!!) in a B2200 pickup... F*CK!! that'd be one rockin' ride...
but hell ya!! the RENESIS will end up in a 7!! i'm gonna speculate (by NO OTHER means other than intuition) that by 2005 we'll see something of the like from Hiroshima, sporting the RENESIS under the hood, of some variation (i'd like to see supercharged)...
i think that n22lasing is right about it coming up in other models, like the MX Tourer (isn't that what you said?? like the Matrix?? i hope that Mazda's actually has some "zoom-zoom", 'cause the Matrix is a slug... my dad own's one...) and i'd LOVE to see it as an option in the new 6, with pricing competitive to kill the Altima!!
Also, for a 3-rotor the eccentric shaft is not only longer, but is either tapered, or a 2-piece depending on the design. I think the tapered shafts ended up being stronger and more reliable than the 2-piece ones, if I remember correctly.
Yes, but not all that different from a 20B. A 20B can output 1000HP if done correctly, so cooling and other issues are quite simple at only 300HP. The tooling for the 20B should still be at Mazda's plant. It would need the same type of reworking as their 13B machines needed when going into Renesis production. Or are they using fully new machines constructed specifically for the Renesis? Hmm, that would cost a pretty penny.
When the RX Evolv was first introduced, there was mention of two engines; one with 250 HP (the one they tell us will be in the RX-8) and a 276 Hp version. I don't know what happened to the latter one but ever since becoming a Mazda owner (1990), I've always felt that the first offereing of engines across all board were about 10% short. Consider an extra 10% in all models; Miata with 156HP, etc.
Now if they would just bring it out with the 276HP engine, that would take care of the Z350, G35 Coupe, S2000, etc. That would be about 10.8 lbs/HP. Talk about hauling ***...:D

They might be saving the higher hp motor for the RX-7.
According to the latest Road and Track, they mention a bunch of upcoming sports cars from Japan, including a 280hp RX-7. They also mention a 200-250hp rotary powered Miata, as well as a bit of info on the Skyline ($70K, 450hp) and Supra (280hp base for $30K, 350hp for $40K).
I haven't received my issue yet (I think my mailman is still reading it), but the info was reported by someone else.
