Sup guys -_____- I recently just got my 04 silver rx8 not even a month ago. (Probably 3 and a half weeks) On the way to school today on the backroads, there was a HUGE tree (im talking 30 feet by 10 feet big) that fell down on the road right around a turn. I was going about 25-30 when i turn the corner with 3 cars in front of me. The first person tried to stop and the second person rear ended them. The third person broke really hard (guessing he pulled the e brake) and i couldn't stop. I rear ended a honda cr - v at about 15mph..... I just got my baby detailed monday this week....

It's in the shop now they said about 2 weeks to get the parts and repair and will be around 3500-5k



The rx8 still looks amazing, even with a torn up front end.

What he said. You should have been able to out-brake a CR-V any day of the week.

Also, using the e-brake is not how you stop fast. The incorrectly named e-brake is really just a parking brake and it only engages the rear wheels on the vast majority of cars. The front wheels do the most work when braking so pulling the parking brake handle will just lock up the rear wheels.

I wouldn't say that the e-brake is incorrectly named. If your brakes fail you can use it to at least engage the rear ones in an emergency.

It's just unbelievable to me how things work here in the states... What parent would buy/let their kid drive a car like an RX-8 at 16?? Not to mention the fact that getting a license in the states is an absolute joke! People can't drive here. At all. Add youth into the mix and voila a ruined RX-8. Nothing against OP but after I got my license "which takes 8 months minimum and by the time you're done you can actually drive" I bought a golf mark II with my own money. 55 whopping horsepower kept me and people around me safe while I gained experience. No wonder there are so many accidents/deaths here percentage wise. 16? Piece of useless paper? Here ya go! Here's a car that corners so hard your cheek is attached to the door! Be safe! Ugh....

Blimey real shame. Didn't realise anyone could drive at 16... WOW... 17's too young IMHO in the UK... but 16, christ. Still, lets see how it goes. Insurance or you paying out? That's an insurance write off there me thinks... and for me, if it costs that much, I'd not bother.

I agree... even 18 is too young to drive a sports car imho (I got my rx8 at that age).
Keeping the safety distance effectively prevents this kind of accidents from happening. I guess the OP had to learn it the hard way.

I am right with you, I spent many hours with my son in the car teaching him how to drive. Lots of rules beyond the states as to how and when he could drive.

No passengers in his car for 6 months after he started driving. Then I signed him up for a Teen driving school that Tire Rack puts on, and he has some more driving schools coming up as well as Autocrosses.

He also has been to the Tail of the Dragon with me twice now, where I spend time in his car with him and having him follow me around for an entire weekend.

@ 19 now he has more seat time in his car than people much older than him. I also made him purchase his own cars, he is on his second car now, he fixed up an 1990 BMW 325i and sold it to buy another 1990 325is. He loves the 325IS so much, he has put a Turner Motorsports Cup Suspension in it, sways, end links, and a lightened flywheel.

He takes good care of that car, and he appreciates what he has and what it took to get it.

I think our drivers license program in the states is a joke, I can only fix what s around me, so I spent a lot of time making sure son is a good defensive driver.

No one bats an eye at all the traffic fatalities in the states, especially the teen ones. I was working with a friend that owned a Autocross driving school, we had Mazda's ear and we were working on creating a program that could tour High Schools around the nation and teach kids more than these stupid drivers license programs do.

Mazda's lawyers nixed it, too much liability. Some kid could take the course on a Friday and get into a accident on Saturday, guaranteed that family would try to sue saying our course contributed to it.

Our litigious society ruins everything.

That's because your law system is a joke as well. That kind of lawsuit would be quickly dismissed in most european countries and the dumbasses would have to pay for your legal and processual expenses. Lmao.

You guys probably don't think this but I'm a really good driver. This was just an accident where I got distracted by many things and didn't break fast enough on a wet slippery road. For a 16 year old I take perfect care of my care. I'm in auto tech and have already changed the brakes, plugs, and the fluids all by myself. I believe I am getting it fixed. It's in Master tech
(www.mastertechcollisions.com) and the guy who owns it is a very good friend of my dad. (Biggest body/repair shop in all of delaware) They said anywhere from 3-6k for the damadge..... Regardless I am getting it fixed and throwing 2 stacks of my own money on it.

Theres nothing wrong with driving at 16 most of us did.
If anything give the guy some credit for having the ***** to post the pic and and tell his story.

I'm sorry, But this comment is ignorant I'm 15 and I drive a 6-speed 2005 GT mazda Rx-8 with a turbo I've been driving my buddy's since I was 12 I take my 8 on I-95 and to work on a daily basis and I've avoided serveral accidents and kept myself and the people around me safe! Not to afend you but I seriously disagree with you. Yes, he is a kid! Yes, he is 16! But, accidents happen even highly trained/experienced people with the Rx-8 get into accidents so don't blame his age.

Turbo RX8 at 15? Nice, I drove a POS 1971 Dodge Colt that I paid $400 for saving my newspaper delivery money.

My son paid $500 for his 1st E30, fixed it up and flipped it for $2500. Then purchased a $3500 E30 all with his own money.

I also have a 9 year old son, and cannot fathom him driving on the street in an RX8 at 12.

I am however moving him up to a 125cc Racing Kart next month. So he can practice driving and racing legally.

I though I was hot **** when I was 16-18 years old, it was not until I got into Autocrossing that I realized how bad of a driver I really was and how much I had to learn about controlling a car.

This is why I have my son in driving schools and Autocrossing, something I wish my old man had done for me. My older one did the racing kart thing too, great way for a kid to cut their teeth and understand car control.

And depending on the makeup of the kid, the easiest way to guarantee that they are going to be driving like a complete tool on the streets, with way too much confidence in their "abilities" from the track.

Not saying that your kids are this way, but lots of others would be.
We have more than enough high school and college jocks that think their God's gifts to the world, and somehow think this applies when they get behind the wheel, too, and then you hear about them on the evening news every couple of months.

Actually, I find a lot of the kids involved in motorsports have their heads screwed on a lot better than your typical HS kid.

My younger one worrries me, my older one when we got him into Karting, we were yelling for him to go faster. The younger one... we are yelling for him to slow down.


Which is ironic because the younger one is more calculating than the older one, he is borderline OCD and we are amazed how he changes when he gets in a Kart.

But, I feel a majority of the kids in motorsports understand the, there is a time and place for everything, discipline and are more responsible. There are exceptions, hell, when we were leaving a Teen driving school in Orlando, one of the instructors driving a Corvette was driving like a raging ******* on the roads leaving, tailgating, speeding, crossing the double yellow. Complete moron, and HE was an instructor?

There is always a toolbag, but I still maintain, most involved in motorsports are more responsible.

I went from a Pontiac Sunfire, to a Mitsubishi Eclipse, to my RX8.

It's in storage for the winter and I miss it bad.
