Question Correlation b/t Break-In and Power above 6250?

I was just wondering if there was a correlation between the way ppl broke their car in and the way it feels above 6250 rpms. Even though most of us had babied the car untill at least 600/1000 miles, Im sure some of you out there went by the book and went all the way up to the red. How does your car run?

Mine has over 1000 miles on it now. I followed the 4500rpm-600 mile break-in to the letter. I feel no power increase above 6250, I feel no power loss above 6250. It just keeps pulling along without any changes, just gets faster.

825 miles thus far.

Break in of at least 600 miles, and lots of power above 6250 rpms.

I had hesitation above 6K after the 600 mile break in but it seems to have gone away. I now have 3200 miles and it pulls strongly all the way to redline, with a bit of a surge above 7500.

2 fixes I've observed so far: 1) floor it, 2) wait until 2000 miles

LOL! That may not ultimately fix some of the "legimate" problems some people may be having, but option #1 would be hell-uva lot of fun for them. :D

I observed the 600 mile/don't go over 6000 rpm break-in. I made that one up myself! Anyway, I've now got around 1200 miles on the car, and I have not noticed any drop-off in power above 6250, nor have I noticed any particular increase in power. Mine just seems to pull hard all the way. I did once slowly take it up to 6000 in second gear and then floored it, and I got put back in my seat, so I don't believe it's missing any power up there.

RTFM. most of the dealer guys don't. the break in was pretty simple really, avoid panic braking and WOT in the first 600 miles, don't go much above 7K.

I babied my car for the first 600 miles and as of today I have 5,100+ miles on the odometer. Under full throttle there is a noticeable dip in acceleration around 6,250 RPMs and acceleration starts to slowly fall off at 7,250. The performance of the engine has not noticeably changed over the course of 5,000+ miles.

There is probably not a big enough sample size yet to prove anything conclusively, but what I get out of the poll is that most people have decent power above 6K regardless of mileage on the car, and a smaller number of people seem to have reduced power in the upper range, again regardless of mileage. Very interesting...if it holds true as the poll sample size increases, it would be interesting to try and find anything about the vehicles...manufacture date, etc....that might correlate with the lack of power.

Has anybody not taken note of the 'break-in' period and floored it from day one?

Some thoughts on the issue suggest that the engine is already bench run-in and running on high revs from delivery maximises the later power delivery of the engine.

My chip flipped around 600 miles. Has lots of power all the way to the top. It comes on smooth with no notches or jumps.

2nd gear around the city is perfect. Very quick and flexible.

Out on the hiway... 4th between 5000 and 8000 carving through slower traffic is a dream. And she stays completely nimble in the triple digits.

I've noticed that after the flip the car sounds different too. It's more throaty at all rpms. This is most noticeable at idle.

And I've got plenty of cool air.

And it hasn't needed any oil yet.

The RX-8 is great. Trolls, get a life, please.

I will second everything you just said. Car really seemed to loosen up at around 600 miles -- great power all the way to 9k (and a little beyond :D )

Above 6250 RPM

Isn't 6250 RPM the point at which the second intake port opens up on the 6MT cars? That should increase HP, or at least not lose it.....I haven't quite hit the magic 600 mile mark, but I've been very happy with the performance so far. I did test drive two RX-8s before I bought. The first one seemed low on power and torque. The second seemed much peppier (and that was the one I bought). Perhaps this illustrates what I've been reading on the forum about significant variances in performance and mileage.
