Coolant Question

Hey guys,

Before anyone says anything... Yes, I did search...

Problem: I got my engine replaced about 3 or 4 months ago and just recently decided to check the coolant level. I noticed that the coolant level was pretty far down the coolant tank, lower than the H and L markings. So I added some more coolant and distilled water about a week ago to bring it back up, but then I check the level again today, and it was right back to where it was before I topped it off... The coolant light never comes on and the engine temp gauge never goes past the middle. I never have any coolant droplets on the driveway or in the garage, so I can't imagine that it would be leaking..

Question:
Should I be concerned?
How do you check the coolant level? (I find its hard to see if its between the L and H on the tank because there so close together, and I cant see through the plastic)
Should I look at getting a coolant flush even though I just got a new engine 4 months / 3000 km's ago?
Should I just keep topping it up? (not sure what the ratio of coolant to water is when the dealer installed the new engine)

Thanks guys!!

Take it back to the dealer and tell them what's going on. The remanned engines are junk.

Some are, some aren't. The gauges in the dash are basically dummy gauges and don't provide accurate data. If you continue to add coolant but it always disappears (leaving no puddle) I would assume you're burning it off, although this should be noticeable. May be a failing coolant seal. Just bring it by the dealership and describe your problems and see what they can diagnose.

They may not have properly filled/burped the system, which would leave you low.

pull the cap off the over flow tank and start the car. Let it warm all the way up so the thermostat opens. Turn you heat on full hot. If you notice your coolant getting lower, add more. It wasn't filled and burped properly. It should take about 10-15 minutes depending on outside temps for you to see the coolant drop.

If the coolant level does not drop, you have other issues.
1. You could have a leak that is burning off and not leaving anything on the ground. A somewhat common culprit is the Thermostat housing gasket (between the housing and the block) Check for greenish discoloring. You'll need an flashlight and a mirror most to see the back side. It's on the front-passenger side where all of the Radiator hoses connect to the block.

2. You could be boiling over. (this would usually leave coolant on the undertray and drops on the ground when you park)

3. You have a bad coolant seal in the in the engine. Drain your oil. Does it look milky? Coolant in oil is easy to spot.

Do you smell anything? Coolant smells sweet. I think it kinda smells like cooking celery.
