Check Engine Light - Spark Plugs

Check Engine Light - Spark Plugs
Hi guys,
I don't know where to post this. I apologize in advance if this should be somewhere else.
I am the proud owner of a 2006 Manual Rx8, with 20,600 miles driven on it.
Recently, during a 900 mile drive, about halfway, the check engine light came on.
I brought it to the dealership, and they told me the following:
1. the compression test is OK
2. you need to replace the sparkplugs, which is no longer under warranty.
3. This will cost 550.00.
4. He said that the price "we can work on it".
Also, another symptom that my car has is that it sometimes has a very slight hesitation to starting...
Should I ask for the results of the compression test? (I'm curious to know if my car needs to have its engine replaced soon).
Also, is there any other option than bringing this to Mazda? (this is seriously too much for me to afford right now). I live in Los Angeles.
Thanks!

That's very pricey.
You can buy the plugs on your own for under 100 bucks.
With only 20K on the coils they should be ok, but it wouldn't hurt to check them out.
Have you done the TSB on the starter? if not, that might be your problem with the tough starting. Foiled plugs will also cause a hard start problem as well
get a printout of the results and ask to see the old plugs
