check engine light, leak in EVAP system

started out as a VERY SMALL leak, now is SMALL leak.... codes are p0456 and p0442..... i cant find fuel filters online for the rx8, i feel stupid asking this but, does it have one?? could a dirty fuel filter result in these codes? (its not my gas cap either) i really hope its the fuel filter causing this light because i dont want to shell out big bucks at the dealer..

a fuel filter will not cause that code. you have a evap leak make sure gas cap is tight. one way to find a leak is by filling the system with smoke but you need a special machine that only a shop will probly have. double check all your lines make sure there is no cracks or disconnected evap solenoids.btw how many miles and wat year

Why are you so sure its not the gas cap? 99/100 of theese that i see at work it is the cap. If you tightened it then it may just need to be replaced.

To the OP, it is your gas cap. Buy a new one light will go away. Also, the 8 does have a fuel filter, problem is is located as an integrated unit with the fuel pump.

What do you guys think is the problem?

As stated above its the gas cap. Go buy a $10 cap (Stant part #10838). Just because the old cap doesnt fall apart in your hands means its ok.

If its not the gas cap (and it may not be), or a rubber fitting at either end of the fuel line, the biggest culprits are the leak diagnostic pump (LDP) and the charcoal canister. The LDP pressurizes the system slightly and any loss in pressure indicates a leak. The charcoal canister allows excess fuel vapor to condense and run back into the tank. I had a recurring P0456 that turned out to be a hairline crack in the charcoal canister. It was located after a smoke test.

If I were you, I'd start with the gas cap, and if that fails to fix the leak, check all the fittings for the fuel system starting in engine bay where the fuel line comes in, and then move back to the charcoal canister and LDP. The lines are all steel I believe, but the fittings are all rubber and clamps.

A P0456 code may be difficult to track down, its not a huge leak and requires multiple failures before the ECU trips the CEL.

do yourself a favor and take it somewhere with a smoke machine (even the dealer can handle EVAP stuff).

The only thing cheap at a dealership is the coffee in the waiting area. I bought my cap from AMAZON But you should be able to find that cap at a local store.

ok, just replaced cap and cleared all my codes.... i had 7 codes total that had accumulated in the last maybe 2k miles(some i had twice).... they were:

p0456 (leak very small
p0442 (leak small)
p2407 EVAP system leak, Detect pump Sense CKT, Intermittent (i have no idea what this means but i had 2 of them)

and finally
p0455 (leak large)

the light isn't on now but i have only driven 3 miles since i cleared the codes.... hopefully it stays off but if not i will let you guys know. What does the p2407 code mean?

Check the connections to the leak diagnostic pump. Like I said above, perhaps it needs to be replaced.
