Cars that are shy on the roads, but a beast on the track.

My associates and i were car talking again and this topic came up, cars that are not so hot on the street but a monster at the track. Of course the RX-8 came up in our conversation, 2 guys in our group really don't like the 8 for what it is , but appreciate what it can do on the track. We came up with some cars that fit the bill.....please add on if you think we missed any.

RX-8
Mini cooper S
NSX- we disagreed on this car .... NSX was a great car, but to many cars would roast it on the street, especailly for a car costing 70-90k!!!!
Integra Type-R
Old school VW rabbit
VW Golf (all years)
S2000
Honda Civic Si( we squabbled over this one, but its a capable track car.....i guess)
Nissan '90's Sentra SE-R
Porsche 944/Turbo- slow for what was out that time in its class, but what a great track car
1st gen RX-7
2nd gen Rx-7
Nissan 240Z, 260Z,280Z, 300ZX(84-89)
VW sirroco
Issuzu Impulse- with the lotus tuned suspension
Dodge Omnn GHLS
BMW Z3
Mazda Miata

Add more , or debate on our choices....

Sorry, but is this just "its slower 0-60 but it can handle"?
Guess I am looking for what "track" it is on - and why it is not so good on the street.

The 944 Turbo was hardly slow for its time. They could run in the 13s and trapped a little over 100mph in the late 80s. That was faster than a Ferrari 328 of the same time period. One car from that time that I would add to the list is the E30 M3, incredible on the track but could get its doors blown off by a DSM or FC TII.

Shouldn't this be more of a "better at track than quarter mile" thread? "Shy on the road" doesn't make any sense. Go drive the Saw Mill Parkway in NY and you'll have plenty of reason to honk at the mustangs who get in your way.

Mazda MX-6/Ford Probe GT would get my vote. For FWD, they handle very well.

Since someone mentioned a Triumph Spitfire, i'll go oldschool also and nominate the underdog of the Triumph brand, the Triumph GT6 M2 and M3. An amazing car for its time!
