They are not crazy and I'll tell you why.... The have a zero negotiation policy on their inventory. The price you see is the price you pay, not a penny less. And you know what, they move everything on their lot usually within 30 days.
So, you, me, and everyother smart buyer would never consider buying from them (unless the price was close to market value), however a large portion of the car buying public will. They have a very good business plan in place, that's whay they are very successful.
Also, we should be happy if they get those kind of inflated prices on RX8s, all it does is help the value of our cars.

Was looking around to buy a truck and went there. i wasnt sure if i was going to keep the 8 or trade it in. They asked if i wanted them to check it out to see how much they would buy my car off me for and i figured sure why not....they offered me 3k for my car. Needless to say I kept the 8 and will not be buying from them if they are going to low ball me like that. service wasnt even all that either.

I have sold them cars, and bought cars... There are sweet spots. Miles are a killer, low mileage cars get a lot more money. Also, there are regional markets for cars. They will move them around if needed. And, the cars are also checked out better than on a trade in lot.
Prices also changes, depending how long it is on the lot. My Probe GT was there awhile, and dropped several $K (seems they discovered it was hard to sell a car with a dead battery).
Just make sure you do your research... They bought my Maxima for $3,500 more than my trade offer, and sold it 2 weeks later in another state for twice what they gave me.

Carmax is a trip. Back in 99' I wanted to a 98' Civic with 12k on it that my business owned very quickly (I paid cash for it a year earlier) and they offered me like 8k for it. I went down the street to the Honda dealer and an hour later had a check in my hands for $12,000.00. They buy cheap and sell high, it's pretty simple if you find a way to move inventory.
A few months back my GF's friend needed a car after she got divorced because the Passat her ex left her was constantly in the shop. So, she went in to carmax, picked a car, traded hers in, and then took the new car home. A few days later they called her to let her know that the financing did not go through and that she needed to return the new car ASAP.
So she went back to return it and get her Passat and they told her that they already sold her Passat to auction and handed her a check for like $2500.00 (what they gave her on trade). She called my GF who then called me and I went to help her out since she doesn't have any family really. I read all the crap she signed and what they did was totally legal and she agreed to all of it so we were forced to leave with the $2500.00 and no car.
Luckily, my buddy had a friend at another Honda dealer who was able to get her into a nice one owner 2008 Civic at a less than stellar 10%APR due to her credit. But it was either that or she would have had to buy a $2500.00 car. I just thought it was shady to let her take the car without having financing finalized.

Dealers do that all the time ^
It can take weeks to get financing done if they have to keep sending an application to different lenders begging for approval. They don't want to send someone away in one of their cars just to have them rack up miles and trash it out, only to have to ask for it back.
(not saying that everyone just racks up miles and trashes them out, but the dealer doesn't know you won't)
They want to get it financed, and even if there is just a slim chance that your credit may qualify thru some scandalous high interest rate lender, then they'll let you take the car and hope for a big check from whatever lender they could get to approve you.
It's always best to secure your financing at a local bank or credit union first, so you don't even have to deal with all of that. Just tell them your bank is taking care of it and skip out on the finance office @ the dealer. Sign the purchase agreement, give the purchase agreement to your bank, and you're done.

Carmax tried to screw me too...
Back when i was trying to sell my 8, which was an 05 and had 43k miles, they offered my $8,000.
They even told me my car was a 10 out of 10.
I just laughed and went on my way

They're a dealership for those afraid to negotiate. They charge a premium for that warm fuzzy feeling, and their non-commission sales people that typically know jack about cars. They also extensively market their reconditioning, yet I've driven a lot of dirty cars at Carmax with obviously broken parts or mechanical issues.
You know what they're good for? Car shopping. They typically have a large selection of varied cars, and are a great place to go test drive a variety of stuff. Then you go buy a car elsewhere for thousands less.

They have the best reconditioning of any used car dealer in the country. With the huge volume of sales they do, a few cars may slip through that need to go back and have something fixed, that's just common sense. Carmax will absolutely fix/repair a lot of issues most other dealers would let slide.
People may feel the price of that RX-8 is too high, and maybe so. But I would bet it's clean and mechanically sound. It'd be a safer bet than one off of a random lot.

Their sales staff is 100% commissioned.

Perhaps they do have the best reconditioning of any used car dealership in the country, but that's a bit like saying that you received the least painful gunshot wound. Everything is relative, but it still sucks. It's possible that my local dealership is worse than others, but rarely do I drive a car there that is worthy of their substantial marketing. They may brag about reconditioning and 150 point inspections, but when I can drive a car and find blatant issues within a few minutes, I'm not buying it.
