Brake pads..
At 40K, my front break pads are gone and I need to replace the originals. Should I get this done at the Mazda dealership which quoted me $380 for the job? Should I find another shop to do it? Are there recommendations as to brake pads?
I don't race or brake too hard very often.

What's the dealer including for that $380?
At 40k you should not need to do anything more than scuff the rotors with emery cloth and put in new pads. Most places will insist on turning the rotors (making more money now, and working toward a new rotor sale next time) at an inflated price. Replacing barke pads yourself is pretty easy, and one of the biggest money-saving DIYs.

At 40K unless you drive with your foot on the brake...or track the car...you likely got a typical...your pads are at 50% quote from the dealer.
The Toyota dealer that does my wifes oil changes...started at about 50% and told her for close to a year she needed new pads before they were worn enough for me to change out
