Question Bike Racks for RX-8

Has anyone put a bike rack on the back of an RX-8 that has a spoiler?
Has anyone put a bike rack on the roof of an Rx-8 that has a sunroof?

Mine has both.

I tried the Saris Bones 3, but the rear bumper is not very well supported, so it ended up putting 2 dents in the bumper :-(
Luckily the next copule of days was fairly warm which caused the dents to pop back out again.

I'm currently looking fo some roof racks

If you're only going to transport ONE bike (and no passengers), you can actually fit it INSIDE the car by taking off the front wheel.

I do this all the time with my 55cm Litespeed Tuscany (road bike).

It's kind of like a puzzle, though -- ask me if you want the details on how to fit it.

I can fit my 58cm Specialized E5 Sworks into the trunk. You have to take off both wheels and the seatpost, but it fits with a little wiggling. Better than a bike rack if you dont have to transport multiple bikes and people (that is what the 4runner is for!)

My friend has an 8 with a Yakima roof rack. Looks cool, the only downside is that the sunroof is nonfunctional now. Not worth it to me, I dont like bike racks on a sports car.

Bike Racks

Yakima has 'em, and I have it set up. Warning, it is tricky to set up because the entire roofline is curved. On my first try I had two bikes on no problem. Even raced a Audi TT at 95 with a bike on top. The second time it slipped and took some paint with it. They look sweet, pain to manage. Yakima has a cam lock design that has got to go... will post a couple of pictures later...

If it's worth anything, I work at a bike shop if you have any specific questions.

I have the Yakima Rack on my RX

Yes, I've successfully installed the Yakima rack system on my roof. And although Yakima suggests you should remove it when not in use (because of sunroof) I've had no problems with keeping it on. Actually, if you follow Yakima's measurements exactly the sunroof doesn't hit the rack. It works great.

I've attached a pic.

Here's the website: http://www.yakima.com/home.html

If you click on the "choose my rack" tab it will tell you what components you need for the RX8.

Bike Rack Available in Netherlands

Mazda Netherlands offers a bike rack for the RX-8.

It's a bit pricey but looks pretty good.

You can download the accessories brochure here:

Yeah, towing is a great use for all that extra torque we have.

I haven't had any problems with slippage. It's very important that you pull back hard on the clips during installation to make sure there's no play. The installation instructions tell you how to fine tune the clips so they won't move. In addition, I had to contact Yakima directly to get the correct measurements for installing on the RX8. For some reason the instructions in the box included measurements for other cars, but not the RX. Let me know if you want the measurements.

$389 for what you can see is a little too much. But then again, the Yakima roof rack system for two bikes is $443. But with the Yakima it can be used for other things...

$389 is cheap

If you compare the price of Yakima products versus competitors like Thule or custom jobs it's cheap. You could easily spend a grand on a custom rack system. Also, I use my rack for surfboards and bikes. It's very multipurpose and well worth the money if you actually use it on a regular basis.
