BHR Ignition

Just installed the BHR Ignition today. Wasn't too bad, and I'm no mechanic at all. I just do basic stuff like oil changes. I've replaced the OEM coils before and I think I'm on my 3rd or 4th spark plug change. Most frustrating thing about the install was the wiring that runs across where the spark plug wires connect to the coils and just the tiny space that you are working in. I definitely used some colorful language I typically don't use . Looking forward to seeing what impact the ignition does. I'd say, the coils coming off didn't appear to be in bad shape, but I was definitely in need of new plugs. For everyone's pleasure, here are pics. Leading plugs were looking pretty bad.

Just by having new coils, wires (I assume you have new wires also), and new plugs, you will immediately notice better performance.

Upgrading from OEM coils to BHR coils you will get a higher voltage spark which gives a more complete combustion and will help give you a slight hp and mpg bump. Some may disagree with that, but even our esteemed verbose moderator RIWWP mentions the BHR kit slight hp gain in his ignition choice post .

I have the BHR coils and wires on my 2008 40th Anniversary Edition RX8 and love them every day. I did get a slight mpg bump (keeping good mileage records from new OEM coils to new BHR coils) !

Appreciate the feedback on the BHR kit. I am so looking forward to taking it out.

I've noticed a drop in MPG over the past year or two. I used to get about 240-250 mi out of a tank now it's more like 225. That was one of the big motivators to getting the BHR. That and the fact that I'd like to never have to replace the coils again . My first tank may not count since I broke the solenoid valve and have to get the part replaced in the coming week.

Also have an air filter coming since I noticed oil on it. I believe I owe this to the dealer, that'll teach me to not do the change myself. I think they overfilled it so bad, that on one high spirited run a few months ago, oil sprayed everywhere. I've since done my own oil change.

In that case be sure to clean your MAF sensor also.

Actually - I lost the instructions (read: I think I left them around the house and the mrs. thought they were trash). But, I found a YouTube video with instructions and they also mentioned bending the OEM baseplate bracket wiring loom tabs down. Most everything with the install was pretty straight forward and obvious.

My statement about it being frustrating was meant to be more of a criticism of my ability to work on a car than it was with your product. Lol - I'm sure most people would say I should leave maintenance on my car to people who know what they are doing. Breaking the solenoid valve on the air intake box easily backs that up. I'm expecting the great things I read about the ignition to be true and will soon be running around to all the 8 owners I know recommending it. (already showed it off to my neighbor who has an 8 once it showed up in the mail).

Gotta learn somehow ("learn by doing" is the phrase used by surgeons during their residency). That's my mindset - or how I justify it to myself (I've broken and subsequently replaced more parts than I care to think about over the years of learning the ins and outs of automotive DIY work, but now I know what/where I need to be extra careful - and in the long run it's still cheaper than having the dealership do it).


I can certainly understand your frustration with the limited work space - something that crops up during virtually every automotive task I undertake. In the end, (in my opinion) the BHR kit was worth every penny and every 4 lettered word that came out of my mouth. It's a damn shame that it's hidden under plastic shrouds and various vacuum lines as the fit and finish and overall quality are as good as if not better than any other aftermarket product I've ever purchased for any of my cars.

Agreed - couldn't have said it better myself. Now that I'm driving the 8 a bit after the work, I can't wait to replace the air filter, clean the MAF sensor, and replace the solenoid valve that I broke (all getting done this weekend) and then drive it like I stole it :D It's been torture keeping the 8 at low RPM's because I broke the solenoid valve. The car really wants to go.
