CA Best way to drive auto around city with lots of STOP SIGNS and HILLS

I live in a city where there are tons of one-way streets, in turn - TONS of stop signs, not to mention hills, steep ones.

I have a 2004 automatic and was wondering what the "best way" would be to drive around this place, it's awful sometimes.

Should I let the tranny do it's job and push her to the next gear OR use the manual and just keep the revving high? Don't forget the hills!

Or maybe it doesn't matter?

Just curious as I'd love to prolong the engine for as long as possible and I do this everyday. Hill, stop, go, hill, stop, go, hill, stop, go etc

Thanks!

Are you talking about the whole "rev the **** out of it" concept? Throw it into neutral and sit there reving it at 9k for about 5 mins every 5 mins you drive should do the trick I think.

I think you are lucky you have an auto in that situation as it would suck to do hill starts every 2 seconds in a manual imo. After every stop just go super duper fast too - dont' forget that.

doesn't really matter to be honest, just drive it like any other car.
However, given the amount of hills in Santa barbara, I personally would manually shift since the power band on our cars is in the higher RPM's so you'll want to keep it up there from time to time. Don't go overboard with keeping the revs too high as your fuel mileage will suffer pretty bad.

I hope you aren't serious, but this much stupid is hard to fake. Free revving an engine does nothing good for it. If you are trolling, this is a terrible attempt at it and you should be ashamed of yourself. Either way, you should be ashamed of yourself.

with the manual trans i got into the habit of revving 1st up a little (4-5k rpm) and then just coasting, but for me there is a stop sign or red light every 100 yards

It's better to drive an automatic where you live at. Leave it to "drive", you don't need to do anything else.

CA

This was an excellent thread conversation.

I was referring to going UP the damn things. I like to do it manually sometimes, but as one poster says - fuel goes to s**t.

I was just curious if it was different on rotorys

Thank you all much appreciated!

yup, that comment about revving the motor is ridiculous and I would never recommend anyone do that to their vehicle as it will not be of any benefit at all.

Monchie has it right: leave it in Drive. You may run into situations where you need to use manual control - like just wanting to hear the revs, or needing an early upshift on a slick road -but for daily driving let the auto do the work. That's what it's for.

I'm sure James is trolling ...

A "how to drive auto" thread? And I thought "how to drive manual" threads were bad...

What is a clutch pedal?...

Joking, just drive it in drive... or sell it for a manual.

This is the first time I've ever heard a forum member giving a compliment on an argument you made
