Bad smell

Hey guys, just wondering if anyone knows how to get rid of a bad smell in maybe the air system. Every day that my car is sitting for a while and I get in, there is almost like an old milk smell in it. I know- it's nasty. I've cleaned the inside repeatedly, but it doesnt go away. It's completely killed the new car smell... Help guys!!

try running the ac for a while and see if that takes out the smell, recirculate the air for a few mins and get air from the outside for a few minutes. If not, take it to the dealership or get new airfilters.

You may have some mildew in the air box. You can try taking the filter out and spraying some diluted chlorox in the box. Be carefull though, cover stuff to make sure you don't get it in places you don't want it.

I'll try that first, thank you. Yeah it's only when the windows are up and the car's been sitting for a little. Not cool.

Zenmoused, I had this happen to me when I first got 8. I had to light an insent and let it burn with the A/C on for 10min. Then I let me car sit all day in the shade with the windows up. That did the trick. Hope that helps you out bro

That's a really good idea dominion. I just got back from vacuuming my car, and formula 2001'ing the whole inside. I'll do this right now and see how it works. But the question is- Cool Rain or Wild Plains incense?

did you put your air system on recycle air, that will give you smell. set it to fresh air this will take out the smell on the ac system, also remember to turn off the ac and keep the fan on for a few min b4 you turn your car off.

I would not advise you to use Chlorox--even diluted with water. If you drip some on carpeting or leather you've got a major stain. Use Lysol spray instead. It will do the same thing as Chlorox and won't affect carpeting/leather.

I live near woods, but I fear it may be decaying pollen... I live in North Carolina, where it's a serious problem.

You know, now matter how many horsepower you have, or how fast you can do 60, it really doesn't matter if your car is stinky.

Just tried that. First results seem good... letting it sit a few minutes then going back to check on it. I'm taking it you've had this prob before?

Check your front end - see if the the fabric of the fire wall in intact - also look for any organic material that may have settled between or beneath the plastic covers - if you live by the woods a mouse may have left you a gift in some odd location, and as the machinery warms it is off gassing.

Check under your seats very carefully, you may have something organic that was tracked in and rolled under where you least expect it. Remove your floor mats and wash them. Sometimes a little mositure will gather under them and permit bacterial growth.

Look for damp areas especially in the trunk area and under the car where water may have splashed upwards - you may need to put it on a rack for this.

Take a real long shower, then wash your feet with a little borax and chlorox, put on fresh socks and a new, never been worn pair of shoes - this will reduce any carry in oder and allow you to pinpoint the place where the off gassing of the material is occuring.

If you still can't find the source - then wash your tires in tomato juice this will remove animal musk - skunk, raccoon etc.- you may have run over it without even knowing it.

Check your moonroof - if you have one - one of your friends may have played an evil joke on you...

Oh yes you do, otherwise I would have submitted that list of possibilities in a slightly different order -
