Back trunk shelf left/right sides: feel car body parts under carpet?

At the back of the trunk on the raised shelf portion on the left and right floor (under the tire kit on the right), is it completely smooth under the trunk carpet or can you feel car body parts?

I got rear ended by a distracted BMW 328i driver and it looks like my bumper will have to replaced and the left tail light. I noticed the back of the trunk on the left and right isn't completely smooth. I'm thinking that it was always like this and just noticed it.

I was hoping that I'd ask some fellow RX-8 owners to double check for me! Thanks in advance.

Looks like about a $1500 fix. May just take the money and run at this point.

It's not completely smooth. There are some gentle bumps. There seem to be matching ones on the left and right, and a few more in the middle that didn't seem symmetric.

FWIW, do you know that there's a documented study showing that BMW drivers are jerks?

Ken - thank you very much for confirming. Looks like it will just be a bumper fix and tail lights for about $1500.00. I think I did read that study - doesn't surprise me in the least. Most of the time, I find them to be badge ****** who drive their cars around like Camrys and Corollas - completely clueless.
