Artificial Shortage????

Everywhere in the press it is stated ALL the RX8's are pre-sold.

In Canada we are supposedly only get 700, all sold!

I just e-mailed a local dealer, he claimed to be getting at lease 7 in the next 2 weeks. He hasn't sold any.

I know another dealer that is getting 5, and only 1 is spoken for!

I REALLY don't think this will be as hard to get as people seem to think.

Don't forget Mazda expects to sell MORE of these than Acura expects to sell of TSXs and the TSX is easy enough to get, there are 3 at my dealer right now!

you bet it is just an Artificial Shortage. If you haven't read my previous post in the Canada forum about these evil marketing schemes, feel free to do so and give me some feedback on what you think.

Oh not only that, they kept "changing their minds" about the numbers. The latest number was "All 600 units are sold in Canada". Hmmmmmmm, didn't you say it was 700 ??!!

Also, I mean really, they are still just making these cars in the factory over there as we speak, they actually expect us to believe they would stop the Canadian line over there just long enough so Canada over gets 700 this year and then resume production to crank out the 2000 or so units for next year ? ..please..

After driving my winning blue 8 all day, and half of last night. I think the US and Canada would be full of a lot happier people if Mazda did overproduce this car. I got the feeling today that people who saw me in my 8 were happier people. I have never had so many people look, smile and give me the thumbs up as I seen today. Strangers walk up in parking lots and ask me what I'm driving. Maybe there is hope for this world after all, and maybe Mazda might have a little bit to do with it. ZOOM, ZOOM.

2005 will likely find dealers overflowing with RX-8s, simply because most interviews with Mazda have quoted a second year production of 30,000, around 12,000 more than they plan to produce for 2004.

By the way, "sold" is a funny term in the auto business, as the entire 2004 production run of Porsche Cayennes is also "sold out" despite there being 50 or more on some dealers' lots.

Basically the cars are sold to the dealer, and the dealer sells the car to you. Once the car is ordered by the dealer, for their lot or ordered by a customer, the car is considered "sold" by the manufacturer. By comparison, "unsold" cars are just cranked out and sit on the manufacturer's own lots awaiting shipment until a dealer places an order for one.
