guys, I m looking fwd to buying an '08(used). Hopefully tmr. one thing I m concerned is that is there any way I can still get an extended warranty from Mazda.

the car is 2005, 60-70K miles, no current warranty with it. I don't wanna pay the bucks for an expensive dealer warranty so ask about mazda's. am I still qualified for that? If so, what should I do to get that warranty?

Any one knows?

There are numerous companies offering extended warranties. Plenty that offer them without you even asking. My insurance company offers a warranty plan even.

Mazda's warranty would likely be one of the more expensive to get.

Keep in mind that Mazda's factory warranty on the engine should still be in effect for either the '08 or '05 you mentioned, as it is 8 years 100,000 miles, unless voided prematurely. But that is just the engine, not bumper to bumper, which it sounds like you want.

I am concerned most about the engine and ignition system. so you mean that any Mazda owners are automatically qualified for the engine warranty(as soon as within 100k miles)? So if I buy the 2005 rx8 and face an engine failure under 100k miles, I still can have a replacement by Mazda? is this right? or do I need to pay money for the Mazda engine warranty or any special processes?

Hmm, it seems like you need some educating on what a warranty is.

From the factory, all RX-8s are given:

1: a 3 year 36,000 mile Bumper to Bumper warranty, covering everything about the car. If something goes wrong, anything, the dealer covers it free of charge

2: a 5 year 60,000 mile Powertrain warranty, covering the engine, transmission, and rear differential. If something goes wrong with one of these items, it is covered free of charge. However, if something goes wrong with something else other than these items, it is not covered under the Powertrain warranty.

3: an 8 year 80,000 mile Federally mandated emissions warranty on the catalytic converter and a few other items

4: an 8 year 100,000 mile Engine Core warranty. This ONLY covers the engine itself, nothing else, not even other items that are related to the engine but are not the engine. (For example, the fuel lines, or ignition, or oil pan, etc...)

These are factory warranties, so they transfer from car to car without any need to register or anything.

If you buy an extended warranty beyond any of these points, they are generally not transferable to a future owner.



For any warranty, you will only get coverage if the issue was not caused by neglect, abuse, accident, etc... Mazda does not expect their body to survive a collision intact (for example), so would not cover body damage from a collision. They also don't expect their engines to survive if people run them out of oil, so they don't accept the liability of coverage.




HOWEVER, for engine replacements, most dealers require maintenance history from the owner to prove that it wasn't neglected. If you buy a used car, you are likely to not get any records, making it VERY hard to get the manufacturer to agree to warranty coverage. If you can buy one WITH records, then yes, you can expect no problems if you need to file a claim.


If you have to file a claim for a new engine, and the Powertrain warranty is expired on that car, then you will typically still have a bill of $100 to $600 for fluids, gaskets, connectors, clips, etc... that much be changed with the engine, but are not part of the engine itself, and thus not covered. This isn't Mazda ripping you off, because they didn't have to offer the 100k engine warranty in the first place. Without it, you would be out of luck past Powertrain, at least they pick up msot of the cost between 60k and 100k.


The only reason you have to pay money for the warranty itself, is if you buy an extended warranty. The "cost" of the factory warranties are part of the original cost of the car when first sold.




Only Bumper to Bumper warranties will cover the ignition. But if you buy an RX-8, EXPECT...repeat ... EXPECT to replace the ignition regularly. Ignoring it and hoping it doesn't fail is a recipe for severe damage to other parts of the car, because it WILL fail. Consider it a maintenance item.

They offered me to buy extended warranty and i declined. If i just knew about the problems with the rx8 a few years ago.
