5th...lower gear ratio = faster acceleration(?)

From my experience:
If you're going uphill 5th would be faster.
Downhill or on level road, 6th would be faster.

If you've already reached redline in 5th gear, you should shift to 6th in order to go faster.

i thought you could max out the odometer in 5th so 6 gear is mainly for highway use

Redline in 5th gear is about 148 mph. Electronic speed limiter in 6th gear is 148 mph. You decide which is faster!
