I had my driver's side airbag changed for the recall but since then I've gotten a NEW letter from Mazda saying that yet another airbag inflator is coming (guessing they're going to replace the Tanaka inflator cartridge with someone else's or a redesigned Tanaka one).

I have RX8 from US market in Ukraine. And my local Mazda official dealer suggested to go back to US to get the replacement (facepalm). Has anyone tried to apply for recall outside US/Canada? I'm pretty sure that with extra pressure it's achievable, but still would be nice to have statistics

For USA:
NEW RECALL 8215F (Drivers Side Airbag), the final update/updated DRIVERS AB INFLATOR begins at end of next week...all S1 owners will be notified in the normal manner, Dealers will not have new parts until the end (roughly) of November.

thanks for the updates Ash.
seems like this has taken a LONG time but I understand the sheer magnitude of the recall so it was to be expected.

I think I'll wait till January once the dealerships get past the initial wave of cars.

BTW: Mazda has dropped TAKATA as ever being a future suppler of Inflators with ammonia nitrate, as has Honda (even though they are a part owner), got this funny feeling TAKATA wont be around in their current configuration much longer, also TAKATA was hit with a $70m fine by US Regulators.
Subaru and Mitsubishi thinking of doing the same.

"We have become aware of evidence that suggests that Takata misrepresented and manipulated test data for certain airbag inflators," the carmaker said. "Honda expects its suppliers to act with integrity at all times and we are deeply troubled by this apparent behaviour by one of our suppliers."

Yeah, given how massive this recall is, the cost to produce replacements, destroy old bags, and the fines expected to be paid out (lets not even talk punitive damages), I highly doubt Takata can survive this financially.

Hey everyone.

I'v been getting letters from Mazda NA about the airbag recall regarding my '05 stating that the airbags are officially recalled, yet that they do not have the parts to perform the recall, and will inform me when they do.

Why even bother sending a letter unless they are just trying to comply with NHTSA regulations, federal law regarding notification, etc.?

I've gotten 5 of these letters so far.

FINAL RECALL 8215F FOR Series 1 RX-8 DRIVERS SIDE AIR BAG INFLATORS IS CURRENTLY ACTIVE,
ALL EFFECTED CARS/OWNERS SHOULD HAVE RECEIVED RE-CALL LETTERS BY NOW.

A PDF Copy of the Final 8215F Owner Letter (November 2015) is posted in the first post in this thread.

So ALL Series 1 owners who are contactable should have received this letter by now, IF you have not contact MNAO.

Yes there may still be some owners who have received many letters and or not had the updated parts fitted, as the parts are still being made.
Under US Re-Call law all car makers have to notify owners about re-call issues even though parts may not be available for some time.

Oh, in North America there is also new Recall 9015L which includes ALL S1 RX-8's not assigned under the original Passenger Side Air Bag Inflator 6913D and 7714F.

Recall 6913D and 7714F is technically CLOSED (as of January 15th 2016) and now must be now claimed by Dealer under Recall 9015L.

An alert for all non North America S1 RX-8 Owners.

It does not matter which country you live in Mazda will replace your Drivers Side and Passenger Side Air Bag Inflators...free of any new parts and labour charges.

IF your privately owned Mazda Dealer is giving you the cold shoulder or the run around, go to your countries Mazda Distributor and complain.

This is a WORLD WIDE RECALL....Please don't blame Mazda.
TAKATA are the ones who supplied all these dodgy Inflators to 65% of all new car brands.

Mazda in Japan, New Zealand, Australia, UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Thailand, Philippines, Russia, China, anywhere Mazda's are sold brand new must repair your RX-8.

Applies to all 2003-2008 Series 1 RX-8's (with the TAKATA product).

last I'd heard we were still in a holding pattern?

Not certain mate, but yes, if you have the letter it means you are 'in the system'...

I understand all in US will be done by the end of first 1/4 2016?

Looks like the Takata CEO has been 'thrown out of office' last week....
Some of their Mexican production facilities although pretty high tech had operators and storage of chemicals which left a lot to the imagination (suppose to be kept dry, but Ammonia Nitrate found outside in bag storage under a tarp!)

My inspection was up end of Jan and happened to get a mailer from a neighborhood dealership I hadn't yet visited for service. Timing was perfect so went in for the inspection and oil change. Before I could ask about the recall, the service adviser not only reminded me of it but offered to take care of it right then as they had the parts in stock. I agreed and was in and out in less than 90 mins. It was recall 8215F as confirmed by my invoice. Hoping it wasn't just because I was a new customer but it was actually a very pleasant experience.

I just read they are expanding the recall yet again, this time on 2008+ vehicles (Honda was the only one mentioned in the article), any news on the S2's yet?

No news on Mazda after 2008 MY...

S2 uses a different module and I am not certain on the suppler (only Mazda knows).
At these vintages like S2 and NC 1 and 2 MX-5 2005-2014 (Miata) has the same steering wheel inflators they have never been included in any recall and at this stage I don't expect the S2 RX-8 to be recalled on this issue.

What I do know is Takata is not Mazda's only SRS Air Bag maker and Infaltor Module supplier.
I think from reading somewhere ages ago that the S2 RX-8 and NC supplier for dashboard was from Europe supplier.

I guess we will see...going past the current recalls we would then be talking Mazda BL 3, 6, CX-7, CX-9, etc, and no word at all, and I honestly don't see it.
One never knows though, Mazda will act if needed.

What Honda does is their business and are a part owner of Takata, remember all the deaths have been in Honda cars, and Mazda had seen none to date (worldwide), even injuries.

I typed in my '08MY vin and it only shows up recall for driver side, is the passenger side also part of the recall?

Thanks

Finally got dealer notification that they have the parts in to replace my driver-side airbag on my 2008 40th anniversary edition. Will be getting my engine compression test also on April 4th, as my 8yr engine warranty is up on May 18 (my 2008 purchase date). Also they will inspect for any weakness in my clutch pedal bracket, as that 8yr extended warranty is also up on May 18.

I got my answer from Mazda.

Thank you for getting back to me with the VIN. The recalls are VIN specific and your 2008 Mazda RX8 is not part of the passenger side air bag recall # 9015L. The only recall on your vehicle is (Recall 8215F Driver Front Air Bag Inflator). If the recall for the passenger side opens up on your vehicle in the future, Mazda would be notifying you by mail.

EVEN THOUGH the wording of 9015L clearly indicate ALL 2003-2008 RX-8... I feel Mazda is not very proactive on fixing manufacturing issue...

Mate, Mazda ARE very proactive in fixing recalls, they are one of if not the best in this field.

Supply is not a Mazda fault, but a Takata (their supplier) issue....

I would guess they are correct, PM me your full VIN and I will check from my sources..

And not ALL passengers side bags were done, some were in high humid areas only, then extended, some were redone because the initial recall inflators were defective, and now there is the Drivers Side Inflator....yours may have already been done/corrected??
