I brought my '07 GT in to Mazda, they ran the VIN, and said the recall only affects my Drivers side. Less than an hour later all fixed

This issue is way too confusing! I keep reading that BOTH driver's and passenger airbag inflators are in the recall. But for my '04 RX-8, I only have a notice about the driver's side. I just got the car out of storage, so I made the appointment with my dealer for next week. Again, they told me that it's just the driver's side. The NTSB's "safer car.gov" website only lists the Mazda 6 as having both airbags needing replaced.
--So-- does anybody know for Sure that there is a notice out there about the passenger's side airbag on the 2004 RX-8? If so, I'd love to see a link or a pdf or something verifiable.

Just had my 2008 40th Anniversary edition driver's side airbag replaced by dealer. That is the only side that Mazda's US dealers are replacing at the moment. They may eventually do the passenger side also, but not imminent according to the dealer.

Just as a data point, I had my passenger airbag replaced early last year under the previous campaign number. Back then when I asked about the driver's side, they pleaded ignorance.

But since then I have received multiple notices about the driver's side, but have just been too busy to get it taken care of. And yes, my vehicle is in Florida, so it is indeed eligible. I guess I'll poke the bear (dealer) again and see what the response is

Yes I am in New Jersey, so maybe us Northerners in less humid states are just getting the driver's side airbag. Yes the earlier recall focused on Southern, more humid states. The dealer kind of hinted that the passenger side replacement may come later for us here, but not imminent until they get to all the driver's side airbags.

MAY 4, 2016.

Mazda is currently investigating the vehicle population affected by today’s announcement by Takata that it is expanding its driver and passenger frontal airbag inflator recall.

None of the 2016 model year Mazda vehicles contain Takata driver or passenger frontal airbag inflators.

IT APPEARS THIS TAKATA ISSUE CONTINUES WITH SERIES II AND OTHER MAZDA's AFTER 2009-2015 MAY BE INCLUDED IN A NEW RECALL....stay tuned...

Yes Takata is expanding its airbag recall worldwide (30-40 million). In the US , the government is demanding additional millions of Takata airbags be replaced in US cars ! And US officials have the legal right to impose big fines on Takata if they don't agree to the new recall orders. Other countries vary in their rights to fine Takata, or have no fine rights at all.

I recently went to Mazda dealer for airbag recall. But I had never seen my airbag light on. After the recall my airbag light on. In addition, there is a leak where the airbag is located. I called the dealer they told me that there is a charge for it. After that, I called Mazda Call Center, I spoke to a customer representative, the person told me that it is not cover by the warranty. What should I do?
Thanks

Well the airbag light they should be able to do something about since they just put the airbags in...

As far as the leak.. If it's leaking below the glove box, your heater core is leaking. You can bypass the hoses going to it but you'll lose the ability to turn the heat on.
However you wont leak coolant all over the passenger floor board either and risk an overheat.

While I have received the recall letter last year from Mazda Canada. I finally got my **** up last week to schedule an appointment with my local dealership. When I asked to confirm if it's just my steering wheel airbag to be replaced because I was concern about potential future rattles or buzz on the entire dash. They replied that it is both sides.
My appointment is next friday. So will find out if I I do get both airbags replaced. Stay tuned.
After almost 10 years of ownership the car's interior is still tight as a drum. Hopefully it remains that way!

Airbag & Dash Pad

Has anyone had the passenger side airbag replaced under the recall and if so, do they replace the dash pad with it or just the inflator and bag?

NZ

Sent an Email to Mazda NZ asking if my RX had one of the recalled airbags and they confirmed that the drivers side airbag needs replacing. Should be replaced this week.

There has been no official recall announced in NZ so I'm happy that they are going to fix it regardless.

UPDATE: I just had my car in for the airbag recall. The work statement only showed driver side airbag. Guess the latest recall update hasn't arrived yet.
They cleaned the 8 inside out and even shined the tires. It may be 10 years old, but parked among the fleet of Mazda3,6 and CX-n, it still gets alot of gawkers.

Even Ferrari are recalling their product due to these Takata inflators.

Ferrari 458 Italia, 458 Spider, California, and FF made from 2009 to 2011.

Thanks Ash.
just used the link in the FAQ to look up my vin and both front and passenger airbags in my car are to be replaced.

Problem is for the passenger it still says, "Incomplete; Remedy not yet available"
Guess I'll just wait for them to get parts in and do them both at once.

For those Aussies and Kiwi's, Mazda Australia has just included the Series 2 RX-8 in TAKATA recall, and also have include all Series 1's again, I believe this is for the round two fix.(or is it round 3?).

Jedi54 is correct, mine also says "Incomplete; Remedy not yet available". Talked with dealer and yes they are waiting for the parts. Fix for my driver's side airbag took almost a year from first notice to getting the parts in, hope this fix for the passenger airbag doesn't take as long, but probably will.

Got passenger air bag recall letter today. No parts available but Mazda "suggests" that no passengers be carried until the passenger airbag is replaced!!!??

Me too! They do more than "suggest" that no passengers ride in the front seat.

"Until this repair is performed, do not allow passengers to ride in the front passenger seat." (emphasis mine)

Driver's side repair took around a year for the parts to be ready. Not sure the gf is going to put up with riding in the back for that long!!

Strange that this type of language was not included on the driver's side recall notice. I guess Mazda cares about my passengers' lives more than mine!

Just got off the phone with Mazda's Customer Experience Center RE: the passenger side air bag inflator recall: 9416E

Tentative timeline for a preliminary fix is 2-3 months. Preliminary fix will be replacing the inflators with original Takata parts to extend the expected lifetime. Takata is apparently still working on the final parts and Mazda does not expect to have the final parts ready until early 2017. All parts are going to be distributed from the South (and CA) to the North, older cars first, then newer.

Ask them nicely and they'll contact your dealer and set you up with a loaner for the next few months. It won't be an 8, but it'll give you peace of mind if you need to drive around with a passenger in the front. Seems like a good time to do some upgrades/repairs that I've been putting off!!
