If mileage improves and new colors are available for 2005.. I will be very very jealous. I would have waited, but who would pass up a new 2004 rx-8 thats staring them in the face?

The 2004 RX-8 came out early for a spring/summer intro (sports car time). But typically, the new model year cars come out around September.

Not really - first deliveries in Japan were in late April or early May; first deliveries in the US were early July.

Anyway - what Mazda did last year has nothing at all to do with what they will do this year. The 1990 Miata went on sale in early/mid-1989, but the 1991 through 1997 model year Miatas went on sale in late September as usual. The 1999 Miata was on sale in early/mid 1998, but the 2000-2004 have only gone on sale in late September as usual. There's two excellent Mazda examples that indicate that even though the first year of a new model went on sale early, the second year of that model was available at the regular time of year.

Regards,
Gordon

Using that whacky USA logic. With all 2003 RX-8's called a 2004. Should all 2004 versions already be called a 2005.

Makes perfect sense to me...............

Thanks Gordon. Makes sense. I will continue my 2004 8 hunt through March.

The 2005's (which will become available in September) will be identical to the 2004's.

The earliest you can expect any trim changes (colors/soft-options) will be in the 2005 mid-year (March - June 2005).

There won't even be the possibility of mechanical changes until 2007 or later, though the accessory market will probably expand.

Just how it works...

Won't Serius radio be available by summertime? I heard 8 Mazda models would be getting Sirius, including the RX-8.

Mazda like most manufacturers often have mid-year inrtros - the 1986 RX-7 - the first of the second generation and the 1990 Miata are examples.

Typically at following years the new cars are in the showrooms in August / September. That's what likely with the 2005s.

Sirius radio will be 'available' - likely as an factory option in very late 2004s or as a dealer or port installed option.

Seems to be that the switch over in actual production can be from March to early June.

What about the rumors of new transmissions (5 speed AT and/or 6 speed sequential) in the works for the 2006 model year? Just wishful thinking?

Manufacturers can call a model year for around 18 months total. There is no deadline other than that.
Look at the Mazda 6. It just recently changed over to the new model year after almost 17 months of being out.
The 2005 model started selling in Feb. if I am not mistaken...

Yes there is - there's US federal regulations governing model year designation vs. manufacturing date. The law states that no model year can be on sale across more than one Jan 1 date (and one of the years when it's on sale has to match the model year).

Typically, a new model year starts in September, on sale for 12 months to the following September. So, a typical 1994 model vehicle is on sale from September 1993 to Sept 1994. The maximum period which a single model year vehicle could theoretically/legally be in production is 23.95 months. For example, a 2005 model could have gone in production Jan 2, 1994 (and on sale a month later), and still be manufactured up until Dec 31, 2005.

Gordon

Production & delivery into the USA is always different.

Series-4 RX-7 (86-88)
Production start = Nov-85
USA delivery = Apr-86

Series-6 RX-7 (92-95)
Production start = Nov-91
USA delivery = Apr-92

The series-4 was logically called an 86 model, by 92 the **** factor on USA marketing had crept in hence why the 92 RX-7 was called a 93 model for 20 months & clouding the age of them all.
