VA want an rx8 but price seems too good..

k so im currently in the field to buy a new car.. i found an rx8 on craigslist, maybe its my rotary paranoia (ive owned about 4 rx7s) id like to get it cause its right in my price range, but my issue is the mileage, i dont know if its too high, just right or questionable, craigslist link will be posted below..although it really doesnt tell ya too much. id usually just get one of my rotary buddies to go with me to check it out but since i havent owned a rotary in a little over 2 years ive kind of lost touch with all of them, and they dont really know too much about rx8s anyways.. should i maybe try and get the price lowered? steer clear of it all together, or get it? any advice would be great

With that mileage, you are well out of the warranty period.

If you're set on getting it, make sure you have the compression tested. Also, make sure you have money set aside for a replacement engine ($2000-$10 000, depending on labour).

I'd recommend skipping this one, and look for less mileage, and maybe even an 06 or later, as some of the issues in the first few years were addressed.

Last, read the stickies. Lots of info can be found regarding year by year changes, issues and other questions you will have. Reading and researching will be your best bet

If you do, you need to bring someone who has knowledge about rotaries and ask for a compression test. Anyway, what soldier already said, it is a high mileage and the warranty is over. If you could find another one with a lower mileage and still has warranty in it, it will be your best bet. Plus, buying private is usually as-is. Whatever or whichever you decided to choose, make the right decision and find a vehicle with warranty in it, good luck.

If you can get it for 5k, drop 3k~ for a new motor and tranny and boom it's all gravy. Being as how you already come from a rotary background I'm sure you can do the work yourself. Best advice is to just wait for the right car or regreat it after you've bought it...

Seems Fair!!

I bought mine off CL same year for 9500 with 85k and a new motor just make sure it runs well and should be good considering the price range. But if you can spend a little more i would get one with less miles but just my opinion!

Re: My own RX-8

I haven't posted here in a long time but I thought I'd throw my two cents' worth in.

I bought a new RX-8 in June of 2005, I absolutely love it, it's been trouble-free. Since I also have another car, the Mazda is not used as a daily driver and as a result, I only have about 26,000 miles on it. Earlier this month I took the car in for an oil change at my local dealer where I first bought it, in Mesa AZ.

Long story short, a sales rep tried to buy the car back from me, for 120% of high Blue Book - and I refuse to sell it. I know the service manager well...I spoke to him at the same and he said "do NOT sell this car!!".

Mazda has dropped the RX-8 for 2012...its successor is coming in a couple of years and I've been told that it will have a piston engine. No more rotary. As much as I love the engine, I feel we have to face reality - Mazda is always going to have problems competing for sales because of the low gas-mileage issue, they've never been able to resolve it. I actually do pretty well in that regard, 17-18 mpg in town, 23-24 on the highway but it takes a LOT of will power to hold the car back to achieve this mileage. I've lost that will power a few times on empty interstates. I've made 3 cross-country trips in mine, rarely do any stop and go driving, it's overwhelmingly highway miles and the car has never given me a minute's trouble. My service rep told me that the resale value of used RX-8s, as they become rarer, is only going to go higher. So, if you have a good one or are looking into finding and buying one in good shape, HANG ONTO IT! Good luck to all RX-8 fans.

Some mis-information in that post.

A "next RX" can't be a piston engine by definition. A different sports car, a new sports car, whatever, but if it is a piston engine it is not physically possible to also be the next rotary. And then there is Mazda's CEO stating publicly that as long as he remains, there will be a rotary in the lineup. Maybe that means he is getting fired soon, since he said he isn't retiring.

Entirely agree with the rest though.

Smile Re: My own RX-8

I never used the term "next RX", I don't think. Mazda does need a flagship sports car to compete, to be successful, and assuming that it will have a piston engine, whatever its name will be is anyone's guess until Mazda leaks it. I do recall a Mazda exec saying a year or two back, "we are committed to the rotary engine". Well, they had to change their minds. If it was the CEO and he doesn't retire, well every manufacturer makes mistakes. I'll miss the engine's attributes..and when the next car arrives, I'll sure consider it if I can afford it. If it still handles like the RX-8, has plenty of power and gets better gas mileage, why not?

I wouldn't buy it....

With that amount of miles, even if the engine is fine, there's plenty of other things that can go wrong. I've never had any problems with my transmission but I've heard of several reaching over 100k miles and the syncros were starting to go bad and that's not a cheap replacement...

I have an 09 R3 for sale with 20K on the clock. I'm asking $21,500. Car is always garage kept and has never been wrecked. Changed the plugs and added magnecor wires at 10k. Oil changed every 3500 miles.
