Thinking of buying one!

Hi Everyone!

Thinking of buying my first RX8, well my first rotary car in general!

i am only young at 21 years old, but i have fallen in love with the RX8 and how they look! but i have a few questions if some more experienced members would be wiling to answer that would be great.

Okay so in the UK i have seen many RX8's for sale, for a decent 06 they are around £3000 which is around $5000 i believe. But if i was to get one, i would also add a single turbo and go and get it tuned, but i have questions about the engine.

How reliable are they? I've read about cold starting problems, a lot of people advertise saying no cold starting problems,

Does it cost a lot of money to run, on average with a turbo, i would drive steady, at a sensible driving rate, are they quite good on fuel for a 2.6?

I'm looking to make this a bit of a project car, are a lot of the mods able to be done by a novice, or are a lot quite complicated,

i don't think i have asked all the questions i wanted to, but the main thing i want to know is about how reliable the engine is, thanks!

ok first off welcome. the engine is actually a 1.3 and they are not very good on gas if you keep the rpms up. cold starts isnt the issue, its hot starts that show possibly compression #s. boosting a renny is a crap shoot and its the only way to get a big hp increase. if you do buy one get a compression test done with a rotary specific tester. also read the new member stickies

That is a 2005 with high mileage. Here are the maintenance items that would need to be checked in its history. And you absolutely have to get a rotary engine-specific compression test done BEFORE purchase. or else you could be buying a failing or failed rotary engine. And it would cost you thousands to replace/or rebuild that engine.

RX8 Club’s recommended maintenance schedule, more comprehensive and proactive than Mazda’s schedule.
30,000 miles:
- Replace Ignition coils
- Replace Plug wires
- Replace Spark plugs
- Clean MAF (mass air flow sensor)
- Clean ESS (e-shaft sensor)
- Reset ESS profile
- Clean power steering connections
- Clean battery terminals and clamps
- Replace transmission fluid
- Replace coolant (Mazda FL-22 is highly recommended)
- Replace air filter
- Replace brake fluid (fluid in the brake lines AND the clutch line)
~$300 USD in parts if you shop smartly.

every 60,000:
...all 30,000, plus...
- Clean all chassis electrical grounding points
- Replace accessory belts
- Clean OMP lines
- Replace rear differential fluid
- Replace thermostat
- Clean / Straighten AC condenser fins
- Clean / Straighten oil cooler fins
- Inspect catalytic converter
- Clean / Inspect intake valving
- Consider / inspect all points in 90,000+ as well, many items fail early
~$130 USD in parts if you shop smartly.

90,000:
...all 30,000, plus any 60,000 not yet done, plus...
- Replace coolant bottle
- Replace radiator hoses
- Replace radiator
- Replace front O2 sensor
- Replace motor mounts
- Inspect clutch pedal assembly for flex / weld breaks
~$900 USD in parts if you shop smartly.
At 100k, anything original in the cooling system is really suspect and failure prone. It represents the biggest threat to your engine.

2005 rx8 shinka

I a considering purchasing a 2005 Mazda Rx8 Shinka, the car has 35K on the original motor. The dad of a friend of mine owns the car and would like to purchase a chevy volt. He is selling for 6K , is this a fair price?
