Question on purchase negotiation...

Hey all.

Just real quick, I've been dreaming of the day I could own an rx8 sense they came out, and have been lurking on here for nearly as long. Never really had the income to spare in order to afford one, and when the time came, I had to be responsible and get an suv for my family. Well I landed a really great job in my field of study, so extra income is pouring in now. I've been tuning and racing nissans for a long time. Took a break for a little over a year, and am ready to start my rx8 obsession finally.

2004 Mazda RX8..6-Speed..Blacked Out...43K Miles...Super Nice

This rx8 is the nearest one to me. I've already looked it over, and test driven it. I like the low mileage, and it isn't in to bad of shape body wise. No rust, etc.

A few things.
Previous owner used off brand synthetic oil from about 5000miles. (Found his number online and gave him a call) dealer dosent know.
All the badges are ripped off and the holes are exposed in the body work.
The wheel paint is pathetic.
The tires are shot, and mismatched. Bfg's on the rear, and some other tire brand on the front.
Toe must be out, steering wheel is off center when traveling straight.
From idle to about 3000 rpm there is a lot of vibration.
Few minor cigarette burns in the interior.

I'm curious how I can use this info to negotiate.

Most of the stuff I don't care about. This is going to be a track/weekend car only. And will constantly be modified. But they don't know that, and I want to score this as low as possible. (More cash for fun stuff).

It's over priced according to kbb and carfax.

I was thinking to go in with an offer at 9000. Wondering your opinions.

Cheers!

The most important thing to do is make sure that the maintenance has been done on (or before) schedule, and that the engine has good compression.

Sounds like the owner neglected the car. Possibly cause a lot of long term damage, if not maintained properly (ie oil changes, etc).

If you want to deal with that headache, then that is a good start for negotiation. If you bring the price down, offer to pay for half of the dealer compression test. If satisfied with the results, use that as more leverage.

Good luck

Thank you.

That's was pretty much my thought on it.

I wasent concerned with its issues, because as a track car,I'd just push it until it broke, then fix it again, and again. The low mileage lured me in, but if it wasent taken care of, then it may as well be near the end of its life.

And another note. Right after posting this, an 06 popped up in my area in perfect shape. Just 150k miles. Pretty impressive for our cars (not sure if the engine is original albeit). The guy drives it over a 1000 highway miles a week for work. Every record kept. And its much much cheaper. I'm planning on looking at it today. Even with the high miles, I'm sure I could get a season of tracking out of it before I rebuilt the engine. Which is fine, I can't wait to open up a renesis and poke around.

I need to do this quick, otherwise my wife is going to randomly come home with a Lexus and I'm going to be screwed ha.

If the car is outwardly a mess...it likely got looked after inside the same way...find another unless you are getting it super cheap

You know what they say...don't judge a book by its cover. If it looks good from the outside, it may not look good from the inside. As others already said, don't waste your time if the car has issues. Find another one with lesser or no issues at all, good luck.
