Anyone Buy an Extended Warranty?
I was curious if any of the current RX-8 owners purchased an Extended Warranty on their car?
It is a first model year, but it does have a 4 year / 50,000 mile protection plan.
Anyone get an extended one?
Please post what you got, and possibly what you paid, if you don't mind...

Is that a Mazda thing, or some dealership offer from a third party? I bought the car with cash and told them up front I didn't want any extras, just the car. We usuallyl don't keep cars long enough to warrant an extended warranty, but we both love this thing and maybe should consider one.
Drop the other shoe, what did you have to pay, how long was it, and who was the seller?

I was planning on getting an extended warranty as I'll blow through that 50k mile warranty in 2 years or less. My dealer quoted me an additionaly 20k or 2 years for "around $1500". Sound right anyone??

I don't have my car yet...
But in 1999, I got an extended (Honda) warranty on my Honda Odyssey VAN. The original warranty on the van was only 3 years / 50,000. As you can tell the years went first.
I got a 7 year / 100,000 mile warranty with $50.00 deductible. For $1200.
That was 4 years ago, I don't think you can get a $50.00 deductible anymore on most extended warrantys.
For a 7 year w/ 100,000 miles I don't think I'd pay more than $1200. Remember you should negotiate this when your buying it. Each area is negotible, the mileage, time, deductible, & Cost. The may have certian packages now, but the cost is "Always" negotible.

Careful, I bite!
I got the Mazda extended warranty that ups it to 6 years / 100,000 miles. I did this for a few reasons:
* I drive high miles anyways (~17000 miles per year with my last car, probably more with this one), so I knew I would use up the mileage on the regular warranty before the years. This brings me closer to parity.
* This is the first model year of the car.
* This is a significantly redesigned engine.
* On most quality/reliability surveys (ie JD Power), Mazda is around average or slightly below. Not as reliable as my previous two Hondas.
* Free oil changes for 3 years (four per year). Seeing as how I would be getting all my work done at the dealership anyways, might as well get it done for free (and more frequently than I otherwise would).
* It's a Mazda warranty, which means any Mazda / Ford / GM dealership (I was surprised at GM) will honor it and use genuine Mazda parts.
* It's a per-visit warranty, so the deductable is the same weather one or multiple parts break.

Is this title ok?
I refused to buy any extended warranty or any plan (The finance guy was like, I haven't give you the number yet, you already turn it down :D ). But the finance guy did sell me the theft replacement plan and knocked a point out of my interest rate (3.09% with my excellent credit), so in the end I'm happy.

Well, I had a bad experience with an extended warranty on my escort, in that it was only honorable at the dealer i bought it in (which was back in florida). So I learned a lesson there... What I AM doing is getting Mechanical Breakdown inssurance from GEICO. It is like $25 extra every 6 months, and it will cover major breakdowns out til 7yr/100,000miles. (so in the end, I'll be paying $350) It does have a $250 deductible, so it will only be for a major breakdown, but it will give me some piece of mind that my wife will be able to get it taken care of when I'm on 'Business Trips', and it can be honored anywhere, unlike the crappy one i payed A LOT more for on the escort.

Everyone please remember you can buy all this crap at a later date. You don't my your dining table and your diner at the same time do you? Not a great example, but I hate dealer tricks. Tell them you are very interested in the extended warranty, you need all the info, and the rock bottom price, you have a "friend" in the warranty biz and you first want to know what he can do. Besides, tell them point blank, give me a few free services here at your dealership and if I like the warranty work you guys do when I come here, I will buy the extended warranty. As if you have a deal as you stick you hand out to shake it. Instictively he will shake it (rude not to) . . . conversation over. He will be too embarassed to tell his other salesman cronnies.

Haven't had any problems in the past. Am not sure what paperwork you are talking about. Doesn't matter though, I'm not paying the $140 a month the dealer wanted.

I'm picking up my RX-8 in 2 hours and am still considering this. So what is a fair price for the Mazda Extended Protection plan at 5, 6, or 7 years (forget miles, my mileage is usually very low)?
Retail is (for $0 and $50 deductibles):
5 yrs: $1854 $1704
6 yrs: $2141 $1924
7 yrs: $2554 $2239
Should I be shooting for $500 off retail? 50%? Extras (oil changes, etc)?
Also, are the free oil changes previously mentioned standard? I don't see them in the literature... Or is that just part of the negotiation?

Terms/Miles* $100 Deductible $0 Deductible
4 Years / 60,000 Miles $ 705 $ 855
4 Years / 75,000 Miles $ 896 $ 1,071
4 Years / 100,000 Miles $ 1,041 $ 1,241
5 Years / 60,000 Miles $ 717 $ 867
5 Years / 75,000 Miles $ 918 $ 1,093
5 Years / 100,000 Miles $ 1,071 $ 1,271
5 Years / 125,000 Miles $ 1,604 N/A
6 Years / 60,000 Miles $ 741 $ 891
6 Years / 75,000 Miles $ 957 $ 1,132
6 Years / 100,000 Miles $ 1,135 $ 1,335
7 Years / 60,000 Miles $ 758 $ 908
7 Years / 75,000 Miles $ 985 $ 1,160
7 Years / 100,000 Miles $ 1,176 $ 1,376
IMO, if you really want the extended warranty, why hassle with the dealer trying to save $500 when you can save more then that by buying the warranty yourself. My 2 cents.

price vs coverage
The extended warranties I've seen have different levels of coverage; silver, gold, platinum etc. The dealer offered me insurence from Western General, ranging from $1595-$1995 depending on what was included. At the $1995 (7year/100000miles, $100 deductible) _everything_ is covered.
No debating if the fuel gauge is part of the fuel system or not.
The contract is valid world-wide; can be transferred to the second owner and is reimbursed if terminated (only for first owner).
Maybe I got suckered, but it gives me peace of mind buying a first year model. Anyway, the only worse investment than buying a car is starting a family

Didn't buy the extended warranty from Mazda (or any of the other stuff pushed at closing). I guess I'm at that stage in life (50+) where I can afford to pay for out-of-warranty repairs.
The only car I ever bought an extended for was our SC-430. It was a first year car and had a lot of mechanical stuff happening with the top. Haven't had any need for it yet, thankfully.

When mine comes in, I will NOT be getting the extended warranty. The car's covered for 4 years already. Any repair job after that will prob cost as much as the warranty -so why bother until then? Also, who knows, I may trade in my car for something else in four or five years, so the warranty won't help me then (plus, I don't believe that it will add much to the resale value of the car)

One thing about the manufactuers warranty, you can return it and get your money back anytime, as long as you return it with in the standard warranty time. So if your going to sell it early you could get your warranty money back. But why would you sell it early? :D

Turns out I did get suckered
After my previous post I sat down and carefully read the tiny text of my extended warranty (the things you expect the salesman is telling you, so you don't have to read it at the time of signing).
Anyway turned out the warrenty wasn't world-wide, just US-Canada. However I had gotten the salesman to write 'world-wide' specifically on the contract, so I went down to the dealer and complained - they appologized and offered to cancel or find one that has the same conditions but applying world-wide (same price).
Happy ending
The moral of the story? - One needs to sit down and really read the paperwork. The fact that these people are working full time selling cars obviously doesn't mean that they know their stuff.
