Whats better to protect your car?

Me and my gf were having a debate, I told her that I think it would be a good idea to leave a key inside of your car so if it ever got broke into you would not have to replace a brokin window and stering colum, just the window. She thinks I'm stoopid. What do you think???

I don't think helping the burgler is a very good idea. I'm agreeing with your GF on this one.

Poison-gas dispenser wired to driver's seat. Don't forget to disarm it before you get in.

Seriously, I have a friend who drove a Datsun 2000 in college. He never locked the car, reasoning that he'd save himself a broken window. He also took his battery in at night- of course in those days, cars didn't have computers...or even electric clocks.

Uhhh...most of the time its an automatic process...they are not going to fumble around to look for the key...and if they find it, they are going to take it...

It's cheaper in the long run to let them damage the car instead of allowing them to steal it...esp when the insurance company finds out that you left the key in it...good luck trying to get any money from them...

How about getting that boot that locks around your rim if you're that paranoid...

how bout you just install a keypad that is connected to the ignition, so you have to type in the correct code for the car to move.

why risk getting a broken window? Leave the key in the ignition, and leave the car running when you aren't around. That way you're assured the thief doesn't run the car hard (while being chased by the police) while it's cold.

I think the best way to protect your car is to give the title and keys over to your girlfriend dude.

AFAIK, 8's wont start without a key even if a thief cracks the ignition lock. Without a tow truck (i suppose there are dealers keys too out there), nobody is going to steal your 8, only get inside and steal stuff.

By leaving the keys in the car you allow your car to be stolen.

unless they SOMEHOW know how to disable the immobilizer system the 8 has. i agree, that would be VERY stupid to just leave the keys in there. and if you are that paranoid, you NEED to move out of that area

You will also jeapordize coverage received by your insurance carrier. One of the first questions asked is if all keys are accounted for. It doesn't look good if you disclose that the keys were in the car or if you conceal the fact that they were inside the car. If the claim is paid out, you're still risking receiving a nonrenewal notice....

Agreed.

I recall prior discussions either on this board or elsewhere that said their insurance carrier either denied the claim or at least they had serious trouble getting the claim processed because they could not account for all the keys.

The most straight forward method of stealing an RX8 would be via a flat bed truck. In either case if someone wants your car bad enough they will take it.

I did think it through a little, there would be a note thats only visible if you are in the car that told you were I keep the key so you cant just walk by and see a key, and I figured since I have lojack I could get the car back with minimum damage. Since I don't want to upset my gf, she won't let me keep one in there. I guess ya'll have a point with the insurance thing.

I'm pretty sure I just get hornable mention for worst post of the year.
