RX8 engine questions

i have heard quite a few things about the engine in the RX8 and just as many things about how these problems will never occur if you treat the engine a certain way, what are the best ways to avoid or delay some of these problems, best oils to uses, how I should be driving it, things like that

RX8 Club’s recommended maintenance schedule, more comprehensive and proactive than Mazda’s schedule.
30,000 miles:
- Replace Ignition coils
- Replace Plug wires
- Replace Spark plugs
- Clean MAF (mass air flow sensor)
- Clean ESS (e-shaft sensor)
- Reset ESS profile
- Clean power steering connections
- Clean battery terminals and clamps
- Replace transmission fluid
- Replace coolant (Mazda FL-22 is highly recommended)
- Replace air filter
- Replace brake fluid (fluid in the brake lines AND the clutch line)
~$300 USD in parts if you shop smartly.

every 60,000:
...all 30,000, plus...
- Clean all chassis electrical grounding points
- Replace accessory belts
- Clean OMP lines
- Replace rear differential fluid
- Replace thermostat
- Clean / Straighten AC condenser fins
- Clean / Straighten oil cooler fins
- Inspect catalytic converter
- Clean / Inspect intake valving
- Consider / inspect all points in 90,000+ as well, many items fail early
~$130 USD in parts if you shop smartly.

90,000:
...all 30,000, plus any 60,000 not yet done, plus...
- Replace coolant bottle
- Replace radiator hoses
- Replace radiator
- Replace front O2 sensor
- Replace motor mounts
- Inspect clutch pedal assembly for flex / weld breaks
~$900 USD in parts if you shop smartly.

But it is also true that a lot of them have an engine life of around 100k?

Some yes, but also many have gone much further. It is partly proper maintenance and proper operation and partly the original condition of the engine, as all RX8 are used cars now. Fortunately the engines can be rebuilt if need be, and the car can live on for a very long time.

To piggy back on that, you can maximize your chances by seeking out a car that was properly taken care of by the previous owner. If they have maintenance records and you review them, great, if they're familiar with the list above and have followed it, even better.

Cheers guys, I really like the RX 8 and have always wanted one but if the maintenance costs are too much I just simply can't afford it

There will most likely be high maintenance cost on most cars that are 10+ years old. Shop smartly and find one well maintained. Look for one that has already had an engine replacement. That might work. Best way to learn is just to enjoy it while you have it.

How much does it generally cost to get the engine replaced?
