new owner, 2010 rx8 r3

bought yesterday from a dealership, overpaid for it but has only 34k miles, some small things i don't really like, that the condition of some things are already kind of worn but overall a nice car. Needs some maintenance items like oil, filter, spark plugs, wires, and coils and it should be running super smooth.

well, i financed. roughly 20k with a 3yr/75mi powertrain warranty. Overpaying by a lot but last one i saw for sale was an 09 for 21k with 40k miles.. I'm going to daily it for about half a year until i save up for a beater daily driver and then use it as a weekend car. I don't want to put too many miles on it.

Welcome and congrats !

You have the rotary engine warrantied to 2018 and 100,000 miles from Mazda anyway. But you do get the engine and rest of the powertrain warrantied until 2018 and 109,000 miles, with the extended warranty, which is good extra coverage for your engine, transmission and differential. Depending on where you live, that may have been a little high to pay. The resale value on RX8s, even series 2 R3s is not high despite what KBB says. But if it makes you happy and you can afford it, that is all that matters. Did they give you a rotary compression test on your motor ? You are covered anyway, but just curious if you know the true condition of your engine.

RX8 Club’s recommended maintenance schedule, more comprehensive and proactive than Mazda’s schedule.
30,000 miles:
- Replace Ignition coils
- Replace Plug wires
- Replace Spark plugs
- Clean MAF (mass air flow sensor)
- Clean ESS (e-shaft sensor)
- Reset ESS profile
- Clean power steering connections
- Clean battery terminals and clamps
- Replace transmission fluid
- Replace coolant (Mazda FL-22 is highly recommended)
- Replace air filter
- Replace brake fluid (fluid in the brake lines AND the clutch line)
~$300 USD in parts if you shop smartly.


every 60,000:
...all 30,000, plus...
- Clean all chassis electrical grounding points
- Replace accessory belts
- Clean OMP lines
- Replace rear differential fluid
- Replace thermostat
- Clean / Straighten AC condenser fins
- Clean / Straighten oil cooler fins
- Inspect catalytic converter
- Clean / Inspect intake valving
- Consider / inspect all points in 90,000+ as well, many items fail early
~$130 USD in parts if you shop smartly.

90,000:
...all 30,000, plus any 60,000 not yet done, plus...
- Replace coolant bottle
- Replace radiator hoses
- Replace radiator
- Replace front O2 sensor
- Replace motor mounts
- Inspect clutch pedal assembly for flex / weld breaks
~$900 USD in parts if you shop smartly.
At 100k, anything original in the cooling system is really suspect and failure prone. It represents the biggest threat to your engine.
