New member, RX8 MGB Hybrid :)

Hi, I'm in Wales in the UK and my business is classic car restoration. Looking forward to pinions on my crazy ideas

Now onto the project...

Mods can feel free to move this to rotary swaps...I cannot post a new thread in there ATM... Post limit?

Basic outline...

5 years ago I bought a 1973 mgb gt. I got everything pretty much sorted to do a rover 220 turbo conversion on it. Now 5 years ago rx8's were still very expensive and earlier 13b were and still are silly money in the UK.

My plan now is to buy a running rx8 and swap the engine, trans and complete rear subframe/axle assembly into the mgb then turbo the Renesis. An rx8 here in UK can be bought for about £600 so it's a cheap option

Thoughts?

Although I'll be the first to say I love the 8 and its engine. What you are talking about, most people say is, a bad idea. I can't see a car being sold for that much having good compression. Forced induction has to be done properly with the Renesis, if you don't know what you're doing and don't tune your computer properly that's running the car, you'll go through engines every other day. Search the forums here for folks that have gone FI, you'll learn a lot.

You'd be surprised. how many people get scared by bad advice from people who don't know rotary engines?

I've been and still am in the research stage at the moment. I've been reading the various boosted build threads with Alot of interest. Brettus' latest project has me hooked

Thanks.

Welcome to the forums. I think a lot of the tuning troubles seen here are people not knowing how the stock ecu runs and tuning based on experience with other ECU's. with a swap you should probably pick a stand alone that your tuner is familiar with.

I would be careful. The cheaper the rx8 probably the worse the engine is. for 600#'s it probably has a bad engine.

Thanks. Yes I'm looking to use a standalone system, probably megasquirt, lots of support for it here in UK.

Quite likely, however 1 sold yesterday for 750, failed its MOT on a broken spring and lambda sensor, engine was sweet. I'd pull and strip the engine before boosting it anyway though

With regard to setup, I'm thinking of going the same route as Brettus, twinscroll turbo for quicker spool but waiting for him to guinea pig it first lol

Not sure, maybe related to all the folks that think the Renesis can be treated just like the other 13Bs?

he's using the deeper 13b apex seals (rx7) IIRC. didn't read what else he had done, if I did it hasn't stuck in my brain so I'll go have another read

I know I can't just bolt an ebay turbo on and get 500hp, I'm not quite that stupid alot of people I know seem to think ebay turbos are awesome, try explaining otherwise and they just look at you blank, as if you're talking in klingon ...
