New from Canada
New here, just bought a 2006 rx8. Very very clean with 150k on it (kilometers). Has a cold air intake and that's about it. The sound of the rotary during the test drive blew me away. Very different then my 2012 civic. Car has been serviced at Mazda dealer since new and has all the records. Pick it up Wednesday , what do you guys suggest for maintenance and things I should do right away. Sorry for not searching just on my cell phone .

Congrats on the new baby and welcome to the family. As for recommended reading, try this on for size:

It is a most informative read and should be compulsory for all new owners of these exceptional cars.

Check if you are still inside engine warranty (8 year or 160k km) and if so, have the dealer perform a compression test. Actually, do the test anyway, ideally before purchase, but if you're still in warranty and it fails, you get a replacement engine for free.. As opposed to for money..

The Mazda 8yr, 100,000 miles/160,000km rotary engine warranty starts from the original sale date of the car. That is what you need to know. At 151,000km it seems you are still under the engine warranty. So you can schedule a rotary engine compression test with any Mazda dealer. They will charge you for it, but if your engine has failing compression result numbers and you are entitled to a reman engine replacement, the compression test costs are covered by Mazda. Whether you have to pay for that compression test or ultimately don't, you need to know your engine's condition in any used rotary. After you get your test results, post them here and we all can help you with any other issues that you need to address to keep it running right. If the car has been serviced at the Mazda dealer since new, they can call up all the service records on their computer for all oil changes done by the dealer.

Called the Mazda dealer , hadn't received service records yet but they ran the vin and engine was replaced 40k ago in 2011. Still booked a compression test anyways but that makes me feel better. Cars from qc I'm from toronto

Welcome, I'm on the edge of purchasing one myself. Lurking on these forms for a while doing some research. Can anyone let me know how much it is for a full engine rebuild and how much for a new engine?

Great that the engine only has 40,000km on it. But you still only have that engine warranty from the original sale date and cumulative mileage of both engines, so you only have 9000km to get a compression test before your engine warranty is done. Glad you booked that compression test anyway, a wise move.

@ NYG.. Check out the Congrats thread below after reading new owners. There are several little things that will make life easier.
@ Hiaqi.. There are several vendors on this site that provide the service, or provide remans. I think a good going price for a reman is around $3K to $4K. then you have to take the old one out and put the new one in. Check with the vendors to be sure.

Picked up the car last night everything runs very well except an issue i didnt notice until this morning. When I push the car in first to second it likes to grind a little into second gear. I might need to adjust the clutch pedal but looking underneath it seems that where the clutch pedal depresses into is leaking a little so might need to fix that?

Grinds into gear pretty good guys, especially first to second. Also down shifting into second grinds alot. Should I bite the bullitt and order a clutch ?
Also grinds into most gears sometimes, clutch seems to have some play in it. Tried adjusting but didn't do too much.
Another tidbit: doesn't matter if it's warm or cold, when the revs are high and shifting it grinds from 1-2 2-3 and some times other gears . Hoping it's not synchros and just clutch .

For the transmission, stick with proven choices imo. MT90, Eunos, or OEM. They are easy enough to obtain and proven to work fantastically. Experimenting with other options just doesn't seem logical to me, there just isn't anything to gain.
MTL is popular in the Miata world, but even there, they recommend MT90 for the harder driven Miatas, like track ones. With the high RPM the transmission input shaft sees, even a mild street driven RX-8 qualifies for that harder use.

Toured around the city till I finally found some. All they had left was 2 quarts of MTL and 1 quart of MT85. I have a local shop around the corner changing it for me this afternoon for 25$. I was thinking having them go 1 jug MTL 1 MT85 and top up if needed with the other bottle of MTL

Yeah, I don't think MTL has a problem, but might need a more frequent change interval.
The only one of the 3 solutions i mentioned that you can just go pick up easily would be the OEM fluid from your local dealer. OTherwise, only "speed shops" (if you have such a thing in Canada) might carry the MT90, and it's an order item. Eunos is order only for sure.

Life After 8K RPM....
NYG..You can obtain MT90 from NEXTMOD in Markham, or Pacific Mall..
OEM uses Penzoil If I am not wrong. (Mazda dealer handed me Pennzoil for rear differential) you an get that from Canadian Tire.
