My Trunk Lid Doesn't Always Pop Open When I Press The Release

Hi everyone, I have a 09 rx8 r3 that I bought in Houston just a few days before Christmas. (Best Christmas gift ever)I'm running 10w30 idemitsu in the engine and idemitsu premix in the gas tank and ad my coil packs, wires and plugs replaced at rotary performance. They also added a block off plate under the the coil packs to extend life. After three tune up I drove the car home to GA and she did great. 325mi to the tank. Filling up as i got to the qtr mark. The car runs great and way blew away my expectations. As I owned an 86 gxl (fc) back in 02 that was stolen from me in 08. This one I must say is a bit more fun. Though my trunk is suspect. Is it supposed to open, or merely pop ajar? And does anyone know why it will unlock but if I don't have someone stand by to lift it, It locks back up. But not always, just most of the time. Do I just need new hydrolic shocks? Any help will be appreciated.

That's new to me. It should pop open a good couple of inches.
The locking by itself happens when you close the doors (wait a couple seconds) and then walk away.
Could be your struts or it could be the locking mech. Try spraying some wd40 (or better grease) in the mechanism?

Interesting. I have the same issue, in fact my truck is kinda stiff.
I wiped some clean Royal Purple onto the shock shafts and the helped a bit... but it is Winter in Chicago, so there is that too.

Mine doesn't pop open either. It just lifts up by half a centimeter. Definitely not an inch and a half. I think you're fine there. I have no idea why it locks though. That's not normal.

Was a spoiler added after the original purchase of the car? Some spoilers are too heavy for the trunk struts. That or a strut has failed.. they should not be that expensive to replace.

2009 rx8 r3

Same thing here in fact I have a problem unlocking passenger door also, the truck lid works will just release and pop up about half inch I don't mind that.. when Ithe works... then when unlocking the passenger door if I press the key fob it'll unlock mine, press again for passenger and most times it won't unlock unless I press it a bunch I've given up and just unlock it from the inside now, locking gives me a bit of trouble from time to time but not that often. Occasionally it'll be hard to get the alarm to set, I have replaced both batteries in both key fobs and from what the dealer told me the second key fob was brandnew... I have read somewhere that an led light can effect the mechanism. . I don't know how true that is but does anyone else have a Mazda symbols on the ground when they open the passenger door at night??? Lol I'll post pictures of it seems aftermarket to me but I could be wrong I was told my car was 100% stock when I bought it besides the oversized battery but I don't mind that.

those lights are called ghost welcome lights. And yes, they are aftermarket. As a matter of fact I just got some in the mail from ebay. But I'm not to into drilling holes in my door panel. So these things will most likely be used to light up my living room ceiling at night, or something cool like illuminating my driveway at night. Idk.... but I don't think it's going on my car.

There is a relatively common issue with door lock actuators. With age, the motors lose their strength and range of motion, resulting in incomplete door unlocking and eventually no unlocking at all. Solution is to replace the lock actuator. They come as a whole big unit from Mazda, but you really just need the motor.
