Yes, it's 5.9 minimum. There IS another chart that shows a line at 6.9, but it's not a pass/fail line.
The chart above is from the factory manual, the engine compression test procedure. At the end it has "if fail, replace the engine".

Did they tell you "it fails the test", and then... "here, have a new engine" ?
Here are some of the other charts out there:
Series 2: https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-tec...3/#post2955700
Zoom posted this one in 2005, seems really high:

Anything below 5.9, when corrected for 250rpm at sea level is officially failing. Anything between 5.9 and high 6s is generally weak, softening. Anything over 7.0 is usually considered good to go.

That is what I was illustrating, there are several charts, and the context isn't always clear. When your compression is normalized, however, your 6.8s increase to 7.2s, your 7.1 increases to 7.5. You aren't failing even on that chart.

Man, those seem high. When my buddy who is a Mazda tech did mine with the OEM tester, the software just lit up green next to each reading and said it was "good". Mine was in the 115psi range the last time we did it with our rotary diagnostics tester.

Agreed, the middle of the three charts is...absurdly high. I can't find it anywhere in the OEM documentation. The only thing I can think of is that the documentation has changed since 2005 and that chart was replaced with the current one.
The series 2 chart is correct for the manual, though I don't really understand why it's so much higher than the series 1 chart. It suggests Mazda is willing to replace series 2 engines more readily.
