2006 Rx8 just shuts off

Ive had my Rx8 for about a year and a half now it is a 2006 automatic. It's been driving fine except Friday I went to go leave work and it started up normal but when I went to go drive forward it drove about 10 feet, stopped accelerating and the car shut off....i let it sit for the weekend and went to try to start it up today and now it won't start up. It just won't fully turn over...not sure what's wrong?
Had a fee friends suggest the fuel pump but they aren't too familiar with rotary engines...any advice please!!

...Belt to the Radiator? What in Tarnation are you talking about? Alright Jimmy, that's your new name here, it's Jimmy. Fuel pump could be a possibility but let's get started with the simple things. Jimmy, are there ANY lights on the dashboard at all? Do you have a friend with a standard OBDII code reader? You're leaving us here, very, very vaguely in the dark. We've got no idea of what's been done to the vehicle, if you've ever done any of the basic work that's required to keep these cars running, we don't know what your service history looks like.

Help us out, Jimmy, and we can help you out. Is the starter engaging at all? The most I can get out of your post is that your starter might not be engaging at all, and if that's the case the best thing to do would be finding out if it's seized. The starter is actually quite possibly one of the easiest parts to replace, but you do have to get under the vehicle to do so.

Okay ill take Jimmy and I'm not a car person at all so I manage the basics of oil changes and that sort of stuff.... it is all stock and yes the starter is engaging but then the vehicle starts to studder a bit and won't stay on....no dash lights come up and I do not have a friend with a reader. Also if you would like to enlighten me on the basic needs of this car to keep it running I will gladly accept ..ive had the car for a year and I do not know the previous history before me. I'm really in the dark too. If the fact that I'm not a car girl helps with why there was a lack of detail then yeah...sorry

Let's get you familiar with a few threads. You've got a lot of reading to do, and a lot of diagnostics to do as well. https://www.rx8club.com/new-member-f...t-here-202454/ Is gonna be a helpful start.

THINGS TO DO - Read, Ask questions, search threads, be more descriptive of your problems. Exact notes of stuff helps.

Things NOT to do - Throw money at your car by going off "suggestions" from "Mechanics"

A tertiary question of me asking is where are you located? You MIGHT just be in luck and have a local rotary guy around who can help you out with maybe a bribe of gas money and some beer.

I'll dig deeper into the forums when I get home. Until then get reading. I'm waiting for someone to post the "things you should do to your rx8" list, I'm headed out of work.

Oh yeah, you've got support. Sorry I didn't respond last night, I get out from work late and my drive takes me an hour home.

- Clean MAF (mass air flow sensor)
- Clean ESS (e-shaft sensor)
- Reset ESS profile
- Clean power steering connections
- Clean battery terminals and clamps
- Replace transmission fluid
- Replace coolant (Mazda FL-22 is highly recommended)
- Replace air filter
- Replace brake fluid (fluid in the brake lines AND the clutch line)
~$300 USD in parts if you shop smartly.

every 60,000:
...all 30,000, plus...
- Clean all chassis electrical grounding points
- Replace accessory belts
- Clean OMP lines
- Replace rear differential fluid
- Replace thermostat
- Clean / Straighten AC condenser fins
- Clean / Straighten oil cooler fins
- Inspect catalytic converter
- Clean / Inspect intake valving
- Consider / inspect all points in 90,000+ as well, many items fail early
~$130 USD in parts if you shop smartly.

90,000:
...all 30,000, plus any 60,000 not yet done, plus...
- Replace coolant bottle
- Replace radiator hoses
- Replace radiator
- Replace front O2 sensor
- Replace motor mounts
- Inspect clutch pedal assembly for flex / weld breaks
~$900 USD in parts if you shop smartly.
At 100k, anything original in the cooling system is really suspect and failure prone. It represents the biggest threat to your engine.

Thanks G! Knew I could find it somewhere.

What we know so far -

1. The battery might be good. Might. Auto parts stores saying "batteries fine bro" Doesn't do much for me, unless they can show it's holding a charge.
2. The belts are turning, which is fine.
3. The starter seems to be engaging from my understanding. A video of attempting to fire would help.

Things to be done -

1. Check the battery to make sure it's actually got enough juice.
2. Check your fuses to make sure there's nothing blown and nothing being annoying and inhibiting start up.
3. Check to make sure your fuel pump is actually still working, which, unless you have an aftermarket exhaust should still be audible with a good ear.

Usually sounds like a slight electrical/mechanical whine. You might have to remove the seats to hear it better.

Great. Again, a video of attempted startup MIGHT help, but might not. Start with the easiest things first. Check your fuses, check your wires, check to make sure that all the plugs are in tight, to make sure all your connections are tight, then start going down the route of yanking the seat to check things. Making sure that all the electrical systems work is a factor that'll play out into what's happening tertiary to that.

Sounds good man. Once you've got the car back to a running spec, I suggest you start getting your suggested maintenance on par.
