Wayne Mazda Navgation Update DVD
For anyone interested in updating their navigation software Wayne Mazda was very cooperative and ordered the disk for me. It will be in in 7-10 days so just go in and ask for it :D

So if this Mazda dealer has the update, wouldn't you think other Mazda dealers would have it also? Might call and check to see if my local dealer has the update.

Doubtful
I posted this thread because of how hard it is to convince the service guys to get the disk from Mazda who also doesn't hand it out alot (do a search in the audio/video/interior forum and you'll se the stuff people have been doing to get their hands on it). You can try your local dealer but its doubtful they will get the disk. Wayne mazda is the largest in the country and i think they have a lot of power on stupid little thngs like this.

ok here is what i found out. the upgrade for the OS (the program, not the cd) is a free upgrade. the new disc that just came out last month from NAVTECH can be purchased at wayne mazda or by calling NAVTECH. just to be sure, call wayne mazda before you go over to make sure they have the new NAVTECH dvds. i hope this helps

ok here is what i have found out from wayne mazda from Steve. turns out the upgrade is a hardware thing. the entire back piece of the navigation where the cd is would need to be replaced and mazda won't replace it under warrenty. wayne mazda told me that if they send my back piece to mazda, they will get the same thing back.
what doyouright900 is talking about is the navteq cd that was recently released. i just don't understand why the older models were not updated with the new navigation system when it came out, but oh well. the new navteq cd will work for the old navigation system so there is no problem there.
the difference between the two navigation systems is that the new system has a split screen feature like the Lexus/Toyota system and the keypad shows up more often when you need to type letters and numbers. there are other minor things but those are the main differences.
i am trying to find out from wayne mazda what it would cost to buy the back piece separately and install it in the car. hopefully it won't be alot since the screen and 95% of the wiring is already in place.

i called navteq today and it took awhile but i finally got ahold of someone. He told me that they pushed the map update disk back a little bit for the RX-8 but as of now it is due to come out sometime in september. i will let you know if i hear anything else.

We need an easier way to distinguish between "map" updates and "firmware" updates. I'd like to see a part number on the "hardware" piece that needs to be replaced. Color me skeptical -- my understanding was that this was a software issue, but I could be wrong.
