I feel a bit guilty coming back here after such a long hiatus sadly to report that my car's engine seems to have called it quits on me.
I myself was out of commission for a while being unable to drive, only to have left the car idle in the driveway for maybe a week or two and now it doesn't want to start. Plugs looked pretty fouled up, and initial compression checks seemed horribly low; I suspected it might have been left in a flooded state all this time.
I got new plugs and tried to air the engine out by pulling the leading plugs and cranking it a bit after the compression test, then put everything back together again and tried to start again to no avail. I did this a few times.
A later check of the compression showed it nearly doubled (up to betweeen 55-73 psi @ ~200 rpm; battery is suffering by now so I got a jump starter). By now I'm losing hope even though I think it's firing occasionally when trying to start, but doesn't take off.
So I think I am coming to a decision with a heavy heart to trade it in. My only dilemma at this point is to either do it as is (for a pathetic value), or get the engine replaced first. I'm not really thrilled with the idea of having to get the engine taken out and shipped somewhere and back, nor the thought of going to the dealership.
I do not have the facilities to do any major work on the car myself. What would you do if you were in my situation? Dibs on parts will happen when I say it will :P (I will post a thread giving local peeps priority).
Oh, and hello everyone! Sorry I've been away for so long.

Hi Mike, it has been a while. Good to see you on here stilll but sorry to hear about the bad luck with the car. Im surprised that after leaving it sit only that short time that something could have hurt the engine like that even being flooded if it was.
How did the car run before all that? Im not sure what I would do in that situation though. Id imagine if it were me id stick with it but my 8 has always sat around more than it has been driven so I guess id have the luxury of taking my time with it all. If I needed something else and didnt want to put the money towards it I guess that I would have to consider trading it in if I could make it worth it to me.

I know the engine's been slowly going south on me for a while now. Over the winter if it got drastically cold, it was extremely hard to start the next morning. After a week of not driving the car, I started it up to just make sure it would still start. I thought I let it run long enough to warm up, but maybe I didn't . And if it didn't, then it would have been in that flooded state all that time after (about 1-2 weeks). That's the only reasoning I can think of to explain it.
I'm leaving the jump starter charging over night, cleaned the new spark plugs one last time, and I'm going to give it another go in the morning. If that doesn't work, then I am likely going to officially throw in the towel.
My financial situation right now is going to be very murky, but I would really like to get into a Miata; probably very used.

Hard to hear that man! Our numbers were finally starting to climb for the first time in a while. Can't blame you for making the financially responsible decision though, but I'm sure it hurts.

Does anyone know of any local mechanics that work on rotary engines closer than Neosho?
I'm looking to get a proper diagnostic done first, as I'm not 100% convinced it can't be started. I really want to try kick-starting by popping the clutch, but I don't want to end up with the car stuck at the bottom of our hill if it doesn't work.
My alternative is to just have it towed to Lou Fusz Mazda.

When I had my engine go out this past summer I pulled it myself and sent it to Rotary Ressurection. I don't really know of anyone in STL that specializes in them though.

Good news! Dealership managed to de-flood it! Service writer mentioned something about using a solution to unstick the seals to regain compression after clearing out the chambers and it managed to start up.
The battery has apparently lost half of its cranking power, so they suspect it might have been partly at fault. I'll be picking the car up tomorrow morning and getting a new battery.

That's awesome news!! Hopefully that keeps it going for a while longer. Maybe a nice seafoam is in store?
In other news, I just got my COBB in the mail today. Trolling the forums all day to try to figure this thing out a little.

Had every intent of buying it and taking it to Pettit for motor/supercharger install, but Cam at Pettit took to long to reply, and Kane sold it to someone else. Oh well.
Right now I still have my WB '04, can't decide if I want to put money into it or buy another newer car with less miles, and then mod it how I want.
How about we do a winery drive? Or maybe drive to Elephant Rocks? I'd also be up for hosting a BBQ at my place in Jeff Co, there are plenty of twisty roads right around here.
