A world without a DOG?

My pooch is getting kind of old. Has trouble standing up sometimes. But he's so happy in his yard, with a few pig ears to chew on. Hope he can hang in there a few years more.

When we lost our dog Judy and I decided to wait a while so we wouldn't be getting a new one out of pure despair.

We got a new one a week later. The despair ruled. Life without a canine friend isn't really a life.

I got my golden to jump through hula-hoops. Everything is cool at 16" above ground. At 18" she stops, puts her paw on the hoop and tries to push it down.

3 ½ years ago the first dog we had died. Less than a month after, while my dad and I came back from my annual hair cut, we saw a poodle standing in front of our house. He was obviously abandonned and he was hungry. We took care of him and we searched his family. Fortunately we failed. We kept him, and he became our new dog. Well, we already had another one but he was depressed alone. So, my older dog was happy and so was the whole family. 9 months ago I became sick. Since that day, this dog took care of me every days in more ways I thought a dog was able to.... Life with a dog is so much better.

My dog is great with kids but not good around other dogs -- always wants to be alpha male. So I can't get him a puppy companion.

But I can't imagine life without a dog. So next time, it will be two puppies at once.

Oh no! What will dyslexic agnostics contemplate all day without Dog

Seriously, it sound slike he's getting up in the years but still has a good quality of life. Just give him a happy home and love him. Also, when his times comes and you're in need of a new companion go to the pound or a rescue organization. My current dog was a puppymill dog that was horribly abused and cared for. She was in such bad shape that she was scheduled to be destroyed as soon as her puppies stopped nursing. She was also older and deemed not adoptable. I didn't care and she can be a bit of a pain but I love her to death and get such a good feeling when she looks at me all doe eyed. That's not a feeling that you can really get from some pup from a dog breeder that's charging a grand per dog. She gives me love and what feels like appreciation, I gave her a second chance on life and that feels damn good. Selfish, but in a good way if you ask me.

Mine is turning 8 this year and I hope he hangs around longer too.

I can't imagine life without a dog. Dogs hold no grudges and always aim to please. When I come home from work, my dog will be the first one to welcome me home. I could honestly say that my best friend is a canine.

Ike, that's a nice story.

Yeah, I'm going to keep the old guy happy and comfortable for as long as I can.

Logging off. I think I'll go see how the pooch is doing.

Ya know I really hate it when these dog threads show up. All it does is make me wish I had a dog. I had one a couple of years ago, but it had some serious dominance issues and we had to take it back to the Humane League. I wanted another dog right away, but my wife is totally turned off of the idea.

When we got our last dog my wife worked from home most days so there was someone there to spend time with the dog. Shortly after giving back the dog, she started commuting again. So now we both work 10 to 12 hour days with an hour commute each way.

Recently she did agree to another dog provided one of us got a job closer to home. By that she means me. Any dog we get is going to be my dog, which fine with me.

I'll get another dog someday, but in the mean time I'll just have to live vicariously through you folks. Post some more pics.

Our goofy dog has taken over our house and has his own Quicken category. I almost got rid of him back in the bad days when his "exuberance" was almost too much to bear. Now I can't imagine being without him. Funny how you grow together. It's a shame dogs don't live longer. Or, maybe it's a lesson?

All this makes me wish I had another dog.

I had to put my Dalmatian down two months ago.

Selfish because you get continuing satisfaction over the fact that you made a bet on that old girl and it worked out and you're both happy? Dude, you've got some good guilt going there. Sure you're not Jewish?

I'd say there's nothing to be ashamed of - you did the right thing. Good deeds are supposed to make you feel good!

We're worried a lot about our old pup. She's a pure-bred poodle, who turns 16 in July. She's studying for her driver's license now. :D

Seriously, she's got basically no immune system, which means she's on constant antibiotics, and her skin and fur are a mess. Her vision is dim at best and she doesn't hear much either. A little stiff in the hips.

But, she's highly mobile for an old fart, goes up and down the stairs of our large 2-story house at least 20 times a day or more, still jumps up on furniture, eats well and makes us laugh.

I constantly wonder when it's the right time to put her down, but I can say unequivocally that it isn't now.

Sulin - a Shiba Inu

Our Keeshond of 13 years died and four months later we bought our Shiba. Great dog, my wife of 44 years passed away last Friday and this dog is a great comfort. She insists on sleeping on my wifes pillow.

Mel, I'm so sorry to hear about your wife. I recall you mentioning she had been ill for some time. I know that having that darling Shiba around must be a great comfort for you, though... my own Shibas have seen me through some pretty low times. She'll manage to coax a smile out of you when nothing else will!

I'm glad you two have each other. We're all (four-legged and two-) sending good thoughts your way.

Our dog is 9 this year. This dog has been so good to my kids and the neighbors kids too. The neighbor had/have a two year old (older now) that everytime she crossed the street our dog would get up and go escort her across the street. I think he likes kids more than he does other dogs.

"Dog is my co-pilot." <--- This is about the only bumper sticker I've ever considered putting on any of my vehicles. I have a border collie/cocker mix, a blue healer, and a fat mutt. Love 'em all, could not imagine life without any of them. The only problem that I have is that the only one who can safely travel in the 8 is the border collie. The other two have a real tough time with the leather seats Up until last year when I got hit by a drunk driver in my wifes Exploder, all three would go just about everywhere with us. I'm currently waiting for the settlement over that crash so I can buy my wife a Tribute. Maybe, just maybe I'll get that bumper sticker then... :D

The problem is drool. My dog can do anything it wants in the Expedition, but when it comes to the 8, I don't think so, doggy.

Anybody buy seatbelt harnesses for their dog? Do they work?

Yep... use 'em on the Sheebs when we're going topless. Although you can't really see the harness he's wearing, note that the seatbelt is being pulled to the front of the seat -- it's attached to his harness. It's what's keeping him from just jumping out of the Miata.

They're also great for the dog's safety in an accident. As I've said here before, dogs become projectiles when you're rear-ended or hit something at speed. The dog will get thrown through the windshield or will escape out of a shattered window unless he's secured somehow.
