I KNOW I am not the only unemployed recent college graduate out there. Graduated in December 08 with a double major in BSBA. I can't find a job for the life of me. The only job offers I've been receiving are from insurance/financial companies, because I took an internship with Farmers Insurance last year. After interning with Farmers, I knew I did not want to sell insurance of financial services [especially now with the way the economy is]. From talking with the agents, you really don't make any money until 2-3 years after becoming a full fledged agent, and a lot of them hate the 8am-9pm aspect of the job. Plus all of the license tests I would have to take and pay for, monthly quotas or get fired during the probation period.
To beat a dead horse, I've applied to numerous places ranging from retail to sales in different industries, to CSR's and other random positions. Nothing. They are just keeping me down, man. I'm overqualified to work retail since I now have a degree [they don't tell you that during the interview, but you know that's what they are thinking], but underqualified for most sales jobs because everyone and their mother wants someone that has 2-5 years experience in sales just for consideration. [Not saying that I am overqualified for retail, I'd take a retail job in a heartbeat]. I don't know how they expect someone to get 2-5 years worth of experience if no one is willing to hire anyone to gain that experience [I'm a walking catch 22]. The only positive thing that I'm having right now is that I have no bills to pay [no student loans or credit cards] and have been enjoying my time off for the past seven months.
I know that my area isn't the greatest for job outlook [Youngstown, Ohio], but I don't exactly have enough money to pack up and move else where. I should have went to truck driving school, tons of places hiring drivers around here. I was able to land an interview with SEARS on Monday, see how that goes.
So what's your story?

what is a BSBA (i'm too lazy to look it up)? and contrary to what you believe, you're not overqualified to work retail. most people in retail have a degree so you can cross that excuse off your list.
EDIT: looked it up and the BSBA is a bachelor's of business admin which is what a lot of people have. you're going to have to show some talents on your resume to get an interview and really shine there. there are a lot of people who have been recently laid off that have experience so it's going to be hard for recent grads. not trying to be doom and gloom here but offering you a chance to really show what you have to offer (not to me but when you apply for your jobs).
it also depends on what type of job you're looking for and the demands you're making. taking a retail job (i know you said you've tried and can't find anything) will probably be a decent way to get a few dollars and get your foot in the door. just keep trying and make sure you aren't selling yourself short on your resume.

I work in the life insurance industry. You are definitely correct it is very boring, I work in the sales area though and it is not stressful in the least. And for those first few years of not making much money you are building up your book of business, many of these agents are quite wealthy later on.
People really need financial services & life insurance these days, something to think about.

You may just want to take what you can get at this point. Add the fact that your degree is probably what 90% of the rest of college grads have, you gotta do what you can to show off your talents or at least get a foot in the door. I know it will be painful but you gotta do what you gotta do. And you are not overqualified for a retail position. I used to work at Best Buy (don't work there, they suck) and the general floor sales people were the ones with degrees and not a single manager of mine had a college degree. So you may actually be overqualified for management at Best Buy
But Good luck man. I know its tough but you should be able to find something.

It is not impossible. It is all about the aproach (and who you know) I'm not double majored, I just have a ton of certs and continue to get more haha, but I have exchanged 5 jobs in the last 3 years. (all by choice never fired)
Best thing I can tell you is pound jobs EVERY day. People aren't hiring because they have employee's, but you better be willing to bet, the day someone walks off or gets fired is the day that the first person to walk through the door has the job. Hound hiring managers till you get the job. If you don't get the sears job, go in every single day asking if he/she has a spot for you today. The only excuse they will give you is "we didn't have a position for you".
Doesn't matter what job you take as long as you take a job that is in a large corporation. I used to work for officemax. I proved myself, but was unhappy with my job. I put in my two weeks, the next day they offered me double my hourly rate. If it wasn't for seeing that company dropping I would have continued. You can have any job you want, but EVERYONE has to start at the bottom.
Also ask for the bottom. Say, "yes I understand I am very educated, but I want to learn the ways of the company before applying to a corporate position"
And by gum check your spelling because I know I just butchered this one.

I quit college after a year, 2 months later I got hired at a web development firm, I now make 50k/year and been there for a year.
Sucks to hear you can't find a job though
I originally got hired as an intern as I was 18 and they were a bit skeptical, then 3 months later I got promoted to Junior Web Developer. In another year I get to drop the "Junior" title and move up to 80k.
Well, I still have a couple years left and I'm hoping the job market will be better. I'm pretty much going straight into grad school though... but I'll probably want a job as well (unless I get some kind of TA job that pays decently). Even with a TA job I'd probably need a little more on the side or something.

Medical IT/Admin is where its at. Also, would you mind posting your resume so I can critique? I'll tell you what I look at before I even call someone. Every time I post a job I get 100+ resumes and 90% get thrown away at first glance.
I don't care what schooling you have as most schooling doesn't teach you ****. All a degree tells me is that you have some type of work ethic to at least be able to make it through college but then again it depends how long it took you and where you went.
The most important thing to me at first glance is your work history and I look to see if you actually took time in preparing your resume or if you just used a word template. Nothing I hate more is an unauthentic intro letter.
^ I sent you a PM with my resume. Sorry, I figured your offer was directed at the OP, but I could use some constructive criticism as well. It's all in plain text though, so it looks just like that, plain.

Chemical and mechanical? care to elaborate? I'm seriously trying to hit the books again and pursuing a web development or design; maybe hit the long road and pursue software engineer.

Web dev has a fairly large market with quite a lot of openings as more and more businesses find the web a much more profitable environment. I should know
well i was confused when i went to school so i switched between the two VERY often and turned out great coz come grad time if i threw in a few more specific classes they said i could double major so i did and walked with a degree in chemical and mechanical engineering. mechanical being more machinery based and chemical being process specializing in the oil/gas industry. i used to live in the middle east for a feew years and MAN they pay alot so maybe after settling down a little ill head out there for a few years and pile up the cash still know tons of people there

That's me! I recently got my BME (Bachelor Music Education) and I can't land a job anywhere I interview. Every time I have been passed up it was because someone has more experience or because they play percussion and that is the hot trend right now. This begs the question....if everybody want someone with experience, then how the hell does someone GET experience?
These are the same experienced Band Directors who bitch and moan at the state convention because young directors are leaving the profession. Go figure....if you can't make a living, then you can't continue in that profession, no matter how much you love the field.
I will perservere...

Why buy an R3? You just get a set of shocks, a foam cross-member, and a body kit...which you're gonna replace anyway.

It's called bullshitting when they ask how many years experience
Take any job you can, save money, and move to area where other jobs are plentiful. I don't know where you live but I lived in bums ville PA and after getting out of college (this was in 04) I could not find a job doing development work anyway, with in a 100 mile radius of that area.
I moved to northern VA in 2006 and had job with in a month. I just switch jobs in March to a higher paying one.
Best thing to do also is apply to the job anyway if it asks for 2 years expereince or something. Your internship can be considered. It doesn't hurt, worst is they don't ever call you. You might get an interview and possibly a job.
It took me 2 years to finally get a job doing what I went to school for. I spent almost 2 years doing something i hated to the point of wanting to die, but it was the highest paying job I could get at the time.

M.E. does seem to be one of the best paying and most successful majors right now. I certainly hope it stays the same when I graduate. I'm 19 and going into my sophomore year of college in M.E.. .
Just out of curiosity. Did you have to take stupid unnecessary programming courses for M.E. like java or C++?

Join the military. Officers make decent money and when you are done, there are INSANE civilian jobs waiting for you. Buddy of mine isnt even an officer and he has a job lined up for when he's out in Oct making over 120k a year to start doing media work for the state of Maryland.
Or...
there's always McDonalds!

Depends on your college's program but in general, no. The only differentiating course I had to take was typical Microsoft classes for advanced excel/word use. IT might be on a course selection for electives if you want to take it, but that's it.

My son graduated from college, was courted by a research company. Bush pushed the work visas through and he was without work. Went back to school, masters in higher education administration and is now a director at a Colorado University.
I suggest those that are still undecided with their careers to take a look at higher education administration as it is one field that needs people.
Good luck to all!
