Tough sentence after judge hears woman laughing at dead bicyclist
Can't say I disagree with what the judge did. I'm sure he'll be criticized for the term because of reason (B) but either way... she took a man's life because she was driving while intoxicated.
Melissa Arrington will spend 10 years in prison because (a) she was driving drunk when she killed bicyclist Paul L'Ecuyer and (b) she was caught on tape laughing about his death.
Judge Michael Cruikshank said during a sentencing hearing that the conversation, which was recorded on a jail telephone, is "breath-taking in its inhumanity," according to the Arizona Daily Star.
He spoke after hearing the 27-year-old stripper laugh while a male friend passed along congratulations: John says as far as he's concerned, you did the world a favor. Because you took out a [expletive] tree hugger, a bicyclist, a Frenchman and a gay guy all in one shot. He's proud of you. He says as far as he's concerned, they should give you a medal and a [expletive] parade.
When the caller says he knows "that's terrible," the laughing inmate says, "No, it's not."
The judge disagreed, and despite Arrington's claims in court that she plans to start an anti-DUI group, he sentenced her to a lengthy term in prison.
Clearly no remorse for a heinous crime against an innocent victim. Where was Darwin on this one??

Lets see. Its ok if you accidently killed someone. But if you are caught laughing about it you get the book thrown at you. I don't give a rats *** if someone is remorseful or wants to do it again. The punishment should match the act, not the "feelings" about the act.

Not being remorseful shows that she could easily do it again. It can't really be construed as an accident when she shows no regret at all of it happening. Its not like she broke a lamp in someones house and then laughed it off, she ******* killed someone becuase of her stupidity. The fact that she doesn't acknowledge her wrong doing is why she got such a harsh sentence.
Can you honestly say that its the same thing, not feeling guilty about the accident, or feeling guilty about it? When the guilty person gets released, they will be more careful and chances of it happening again are slim. When this dumbass gets released she is just as likely to kill someone again, because her actions the first time had no effect on the way she thought. The judge made it a point to give her a good long sentence so that she might have the time to think about what she did and regret it, hence stopping it from happening again.
And one more thing, that ugly bitch was a stripper?
We really do need to start weeding out the gene pool.
I only hope she f*&^s up while in there and spends way longer than 10 years.
I totally agree with the judge and would've given her the absolute maximium, and then I'd have the jail people watching her every move and tacking on any additional time I could.

Bring on the wrongful death civil suit. The family could financially own her. I'm usually not a fan of the whole double suit criminal/civil but I would have no qualms about suing in this case.
"Bitch you are going to be their slave!"

i applaud arizona for taking a tough stance with drinking and driving. Recently a girl i knew got a Super Extreme Dui (blew a .251). Her family lawyer would not take the case because they don't negotiate for SEDUI. her car was impounded, she has minimum of 3800 in fines and court costs, 45 days in jail which can not be reduced for attending class. She must also attend a substance abuse class. Liscence is gone for a year. She also has to pay for the days she is in jail, and she has to pay for an interlock device after she gets her licence/car back which runs at about 180 a month.
