I went to the Mazda dealer down the road this afternoon, asked them if they were taking deposits, and told them what I was expecting. To start, I knew more about the RX-8 than any of them, which I'm sure they just loved since I'm female. They said they were taking deposits, and putting them in escrow (that, at least, was good). I asked if they could guarantee me MSRP, and if I could pick out my car when they put in the orders, and the salesguy went and got his manager (yay ). The manager proceeded to tell me that they didn't want to guarantee MSRP since they always sell under MSRP, and don't want to rip anyone off. Um, huh?
So, I'm thinking that either they are really nice guys (yeah, right) or there is something else going on- sounds like they don't want to have to guarantee that they'll sell the car at MSRP now so they can jack it up when it gets here, though I could be wrong and maybe they were serious. I was also told that they've got a bunch of people on the list for information, but only about 7 that have made actual deposits(including someone that's put down $5k- guess he wants it pretty bad) and they are the ones who'll get to actually pick out cars. I'm going to talk to the other Mazda dealer on the other side of town and see what they say. Hopefully, I can get something in writing from one of them that will guarantee MSRP or below. At least it didn't sound like they were expecting any kind of shortage. And they said their techs were going to DC in a few weeks to start training on the new rotary engines, which is also a plus.
And on an unrelated note, I also made my husband test drive a Miata today. He didn't believe me about how much fun they were. Now he's mad because I wouldn't let him trade in his car and buy it on the spot.
And something else kinda funny, this dealer is also a Ford/Lincoln/Mercury dealer(surprise surprise), and the salesguy mentioned that they keep getting people trading in their Mustangs for Millenias. Literally. And they had about 30 used Mustangs on the lot, and virtually no Millenias left. Odd.

I can vouch for the Millenia. I own one myself and have had nothing but positive experiences with it. Looking forward to owning the RX-8 as soon as it is available.

Don't let Hercules see this thread.. I'm sick of hearing about his Millenia.. :p
Regarding the dealer, my bet is he wouldn't guarantee MSRP because he wants to jack up the prices. Not because "they like to sell cars under MSRP!? Hahahahaha... that's a good one coming from the mouth of a sales manager.. hehe.. He wasn't struck by lighting on the spot was he? :D
Elara, which dealer was it? So far, I think I'm not getting blasted by Bill Britt Mazda in Fredericksburg and some others have mentioned good things about him, but I'm looking for as many opinions as I can. They also let me put down a deposit and guaranteed MSRP. Some other experiences with them may help me prepare when it comes closer to the pick up date.
This was Capitol Ford-Lincoln-Mercury/Mazda at Broad and Parham in Richmond. I even told the guy that if they couldn't guarantee me MSRP I was going to Bill Britt, because I didn't mind waiting for the car as long as I wasn't paying over MSRP and got to order it to my specs. So, either they thought I was a complete moron, or they were telling the truth.
I'm more inclined to think they thought I was stupid, and that they figured they'd be able to jack the price up later on. I'm going to go to Whitten Bros. in Southside Richmond and check with them- they've got more awards anyway, and see what they say. Again, if I don't have to drive to Fredericksburg, I won't- but it's sounding more and more like I will have to. The sales guy I talked to didn't even know there were pictures of the interior of the yellow car. Um, hello- they've been around since last January...
Out of an act of good will, I sent the salesperson that is selling me my car the RX-8 promo CD-ROM. It's old, but contains enough useful info to help any salesperson to at least sound somewhat knowledgeable when talking to potential customers. As long as they don't force that Armor Plate crap on me I think I'll get a good deal.

Actually, they probably want to sell you the RX-8 UNDER MSRP. (for now at least)
Think about it for a second. How many Mazdas has any of those salespeople/salesmanagers sold at MSRP or above in the recent years? When I put down my deposit, and had the guy write down "Guaranteed MSRP" on the receipt, he pretty much just grinned, as if he was saying "He's going to buy a car at MSRP! SUCKER!!!"
Granted, some dealerships DO know what the RX-8 is all about, thus some of the markups that we've heard. But if you go to a smaller dealership that doesn't know anything about the RX-8 (like the one I'm going to, and from the sounds of it, the one you're going to as well), they think it's just another car.
Until the RX-8 is almost here, I'd expect alot of us enthusiasts who are "crazy" enough to get on a "waiting list" will get these strange looks when asking for MSRP.....

It could be the case but don't bet on it.. I think that the Mazda dealers know of the success the Mazda6 is having and with the 8, they should be able to get away with some shenannigans... so my advice to you is after the car's launch in January (provided boowana is right :D), get it in writing that the car will be NO HIGHER than MSRP.
Oh I'm fairly certain that they'll want to jack up the price of the RX-8 when it comes out. I just think that currently the clueless dealerships wouldn't understand why people are asking for MSRP, when everyone they've dealt with in the past few years are wanting invoice prices....
Is the Mazda6 out already? Are there waiting lists and markups? (I haven't kept up with it). I do like it, but I'm doubting that there's going to be that much hoopla with it coming from the general public. It just doesn't have that "I've got to have it" vibe that the RX-8, 350Z, Z4, and other cars have.
Doesn't the Mazda6 come out in the next few weeks? There weren't any on the lot, at any case.
And one kinda neat thing that has nothing to do with Mazda- on the way back from the Mazda place, we saw a Z4 go driving by. We immediately turned around and went to the BMW place, and sure enough, they told us they had 4 and had already sold one that morning. We sat in one, but didn't want to tempt ourselves by driving it.
In the VA area, I've heard as much as 4k dollar mark ups at some dealers for the Mazdaspeed Protege. I'll be staying away from those dealers!! I don't know what the limit is on production for the MPS Protege vs. the new 6, but MSRP or higher is probably inevitable if you haven't already put a deposit on one.
I went to my local MazdaSpeed dealer here in Tokyo at the weekend only to be disappointed. He didn't know anything about the car. I enquired about putting down a deposit or getting on a waiting list but his response was "I can't sell you something that doesn't exist!"! We went around and around on this tack for a while (me pointing out I want the car as soon as it comes out, him agreeing there will be a long waiting list when it does come out, him not seeing the connection of me wanting to get on the waiting list now) before he took my name and address and told me to come back in January. It's hard to tell if I hit a language barrier, cultural difference or bad dealer. I think it's a cultural thing as my (Japanese) wife says she's never heard of waiting lists but it seems odd to me.
He did redeem himself slightly in my estimations though: he was about to try to sell me an Atenza, then took a look at my S2000 and said maybe it would be a bit boring for me!

no but it does have the award wining, sold out in europe, kicking the a@@ of accord and camry, running head to head with bmw kinda vibe about it:D
If no one paid over sticker, what would the poor dealers do?
My understanding is that Mazda is planning to ramp up production from the get-go which should counter any of the BS associated with limited production cars and pricing hype
I would suggest that if a dealer won't sell you a car at list, send a letter or email to every Mazda sales manager in your area telling him or her that in consideration of getting an Rx-8 early (specify a time limit like 60 days), that you are willing to pay full pop list. If he wants even a penny over sticker, move on.
It is only stupid consumers that support the "over-sticker" stuff that causes the problem in the first place.
God knows we've all waited a long time and for something so great, wait out the dealer, he will eventually have lots of them to sell.
My 2 cents worth.:o

I'm glad my lease isn't up until Feb 04. This gives me more time to evaluate the market. Demand for these cars dies out fairly quickly once the hype dies down.

Ciao,
Don
Then what about the Miata and SVT products I don't see them slowing sales wise.
Yes Yes but theres a little back story to it. The Mach1 Mustang Ford is gearing up for that one. And yes there is teething problems with the S/C 4.6 and rather than get a blackeye like the 1999's correct it now. But the Cobra should be back in late Nov early Dec. 2002. Or just get the Mach1 out then resum Cobra production. This is what my uncle told me from one of his coworkers at Ford.
