Just Bought My First RX8
I just made a recent purchase of an RX8 for my girlfriend. I drive a Chrysler Crossfire and figured it was time for her to have a sports car of her very own. So I took my pennies and did some research and nailed one down on ebay. It was about 4 hrs away and we had a trade in to make (which arrived almost completely DOA)...the car had just had the engine replace by Mazda about 20K ago, so that was a very appealing part of the purchase. There had be aftermarket parts added to the car (D2 gas coilover, Greddy cat back, Magnaflow cat, Event Headers, Weapon R intake, Privat Rims, Drill/slotted rotars, and a few other small details. Normally, I wouldn't like that about a car, but it all appeared to be done professionally. I got the price down to $6500 and drove off. So far, though, there have been a couple of issues, but nothing really mechanically wrong...for starters the car was riding about an inch off the ground so that had to be lifted (which was an easy job and getting the alignment was the only cost there), then my girlfriend hit some road damage and popped a pinhole leak in the radiator (had to seal it, then I liquid glassed it, and jb welded the leak), then someone chalked our tires with nails (I think it was the neighbor kid I caught peeing in my back yard, by which I shot him with my paintball gun and when he fell down he peed all over himself...must've been 'pissed' about that), but as far as mechanically, the car has been running fine. I need to replace the O2 sensors, however. She commutes to college about 30-40 mins away and works about 15 mins away from home, and so far the best gas mileage we've seen is 23 mpg. Now, I don't mean to sound ignorant, but that's lousy in my book, when it's all highway. My Crossfire gets almost 30 mpg (highway and city don't make much of a difference either). So I think (know) if the 02 sensors are out, it could be causing a lean/rich effect on the fuel management. Ah...another thing to mention...the car idled a little rough...dig this..I pulled the throttle body to check for blow back deposits...cleaned it...now she runs ever so smooth...if it wasn't for the exhaust notes (which I love) you wouldn't know it was running! Anyway...I'll repost when I put the 02 sensors in and do a couple of other things to spruce her up.
