YES I have a radar detector: Escort 9500 ix
I absolutely trust it
the greatest radar detector in the world is the one between your ears, the Passport comes in2nd.
as long as you don't solely rely on it, you'll be fine. Do I speed? absolutely, you just need to be smart about it.
Never be the fastest car on the road, never be out in front of a pack, never speed in areas you're not familiar with, etc etc
People always ask me, "omg, how many speeding tickets do you have that you need a Radar Detector?!"
to which I answer, "NONE and I plan on keeping it that way."

Everyone just needs to learn to the taste the slow, and love it.
i think they are illegal in most states, but then again what isnt illegal now
That is wrong. They are considered illegal in Virginia and Wash DC. I believe they are legal in all other states (Connecticut?). You may find other states, like Minnesota that ban things that stick to the windshield.
I also use an Escort 8500

+1 9500ix FTW!
I don't trust my radar detective to be my be-all end-all saving grace. Do I trust that when it is going off, something is actually out there? Yes!
Do I trust it to save me when I am being stupid? No!
I rely first on experience (and boy do I have alot of it), not being the only fast bastard on the road, watching ahead for traffic reactions, paying attention to "if I was a cop, that spot would be perfect!" etc... The detector is simply another tool that I use, I do not trust it to get me out of everything, because there are plenty of tools law enforcement use other than radar. Laser, Aircraft, Timing, Pacing, etc...
I had a cheap Cobra that was dying anyway from heat and cold extremes I believe, it lasted a bit less than a year before I would be setting it off. It got stolen (thanks?) and I replaced it with the Passport 9500ix. The GPS/signal memorization is awesome.
I'm no angel, so you won't find me saying "don't speed". I have had literally dozens of speeding tickets and several license suspensions, most of the former and all of the latter from my early license days (I was stupid alot). I restrain myself quite a bit more now, and that saves me more than anything else.

They are actually only illegal in VA and DC. The other 49 states they are completely legal in.
Edit: Thanks. Just VA and DC. CT comment had me worried for a moment, I drive through there with mine up all the time
Valentine 1, both my parents own one and I do too, saved all of us plenty of times, but like my Sgt. says, if you are going to be stupid be smart about it so i always follow someone going the same speed i want to go about 1/2 mile behind that car. And trust it with my license.

V1 FTW I have mine hardwired in. It has saved my *** countless times. and it tells what it is that's setting it off so I know if it is a false alarm.
I don't always trust it. I slow down around corners and over hills. But if I am just cruising I do.
I have a lynx spider radar/laser detector and it has a front and rear sensor. I trust it by far more than any other radar detector i have had. It reads any activity from like 3 miles away lol. I love that i can speed anytime i want and not worry.
^ whered you get it and about how much? ive been looking into sth like this for a while just been lazy to do the research

you got me i remember my dad tellin me something like that but i asked him its only illegal for semis in most states cause they are considered professionals
It actually came with the car when i bought it. I did google it though and found it on the first page but they currently do not have any in stock. I googled "lynx spider radar laser detector". It has two sensors and a gray monitor that is inside the car. But i cant seem to find it, so you may have to do some research to find them
they will alert you if you're not watching your surroundings, but nothing will save you more than just being alert.
my other favorite is making sure you're not the first one or last one in your immediate vicinity. Trailing a few cars that suddenly show brake lights = great cop detection.
Ive found I don't really need one where I am... Im usually in city traffic anyway, and excessive speeding would be reckless where I usually drive. If I lived in a more rural area, Im sure Id get one
So far its been 5yrs w/o a speeding ticket.... +1 on being alert/paying attention
V1 and a red Escort 8500 X50, but like some others say, they should just compliment your common sense. Look out for overpasses, on-ramps, don't swerve constantly, etc.
Sometimes cops don't use their gear (in case you're using yours) they speed up to catch up to you and track how long it takes them to get to you. Don't use your brakes, downshift tug the parking brake and move over.
