I've been looking to get a sports coat just for casual wear... I've managed to find a couple I like so far, but the sizing has always been slightly off. I'm around 6' or 6'1" and wear a 38, but a 40 will usually work well. The thing I'm unsure about is how much a difference there is between a regular and short... the coat I like the most is only available in 40S and 40L... Would those still look right, or would the difference be apparent? Should I just hold off till I find something I like in the perfect fit? As I said earlier, it is for casual wear, so I'm not looking for a perfect fit that was made for me, just something that will look proper...

If you find something off the rack that fits and you feel it makes you look good, ask your girld friend or you wife and she will probably tell you the truth...
If you want to find something that really fits and looks good - it's time to find a real tailor - If you have a military base anywhere near - there is almost always somewhere near by where they do alterations and they really don't cost that much. Once you discover how good a proper fitting can make you look, you will find it addictive....

Well, I've been to local stores and such looking for a good fit, and didnt find anything I wanted in my size, but they didnt really have anything in 38's or 40's for what I wanted. So I resorted to the good ol' internet... and as I was saying, they have a few things that catch my eye, but are unfortunately close, but not my exact size.
I already have a few that are perfect fits for me, but they're either too formal for what I'm looking for, or just too nice/expensive for me to want to use them regularly for casual wear. Mind you, when I say casual, I mean really casual... I'm looking to just dress up the t-shirt and jeans look a little bit, so I dont need anything amazing, but still want it to be of good quality (want it to hold up well and still look nice). And since it's something that's meant to be so casual, as well as something I dont need to worry about getting messed up as much, I dont mind if the fit is only a little off. I'm just unsure of how much of a difference there is going from a regular to a short, or a regular to a long. I guess I can go back to the stores and just try one on, but since I was just there today, I know I'd have no intention of buying anything they have at the moment. But I guess it could be worth it if it helps the deciding process.
well how tall you are says nothing about how long your arms are which is what the short regular and long really indicates (i guess it indicates shoulder width compared to chest width as well). Just go to a department store, first suit i bought they meausured me and fitted me all around, for free! Told me what my size is... if the customer doesn't know what to buy, they are less likely to buy anything...they wanna sell ya that coat.

well I know for a fact that I'm a 38 regular, but a 39 and 40 will work as well... slightly looser but it doesnt look bad by any means. I think I need to go back to the mall today anyways (girlfriend wants to go now) so I'm going to just try on a few different sizes and figure out if I mind the difference or not...

If you got the money, get tailored - it will help the local economy and if you are going to spend the money anyway, it will help out some one who makes a living making you look good - Especially if you are a big sized guy... There are not that many off-the-racks that match collar, arm length and fullness properly -
I and another co-worker found this out when we wanted to get our big Scandahovian engineer outfitted for a presentation - we were tired of his arms sticking 6 inches longer than his sleeves, and his butt cleavage showing like a plumber's when he bent over.
We were amazed, with the help of a good tailor, even a 6 foot 7 inch Norse giant could look almost civilized!
And if you want something in fur or leather, it is worth a trip to Alaska. They have some really excellent leather workers, lots of types of material to choose from, and unless you are going for Russian squirrel or wild pelts, it will be an American product. About every third shop in Fairbanks makes impressive leather jackets...
