Okay, so I'm looking at the picture of the rally car, and I see how they set up the hood so hot air will be extracted right behind the radiator. But less than six inches behind where hot air is coming out, they have a scoop that looks like it will catch every bit of the hot air, and pump it back into the engine bay across what I assume is the intercooler.
Does anyone else see that as self-defeating?

that front scoop serves different purposes than you think. It runs the air through the intercooler, not radiator, and it's mostly there for a front spoiler.
the radiator is under the hood scoop. So everything's opposite to the road car
Can't get the damn road car pics to work...working on that part.
I like it better. I think if Subie had offered the 2001-2003 WRX with the same headlights (or a similar style) as their rally cars, a re-design wouldn't have been necessary.
i LOVE those headlights... huge improvement... from cartoony, to contemporary Japanese aggression, a la the Nissan R-34 GT-R skyline...
but you're SURE that the radiator is on top (or behind) the engine?? why the hell would they do that?? maybe that's how Solberg and Makkinnen continue to blow up...
every other team just has the radiator above the intercooler, behind a little... and if Prodrive is trying to make df at the cost of an enormous relocation like that, why not look at the Peugot fron diffuser solution (as seen on many other race cars, like the Porsche Cup cars... side exits in front of the wheel denote this apporach) and NOT move it somewhere screwy like that??
actually yeah, I bone headed there... the air intake is at the hood scoop.
the radiator is below the intercooler, and both are at the very front of the hood. Don't mind my brainfart, please
as for Subaru's designers, they've hired a new one, he's making the 2006 Impreza (the next complete redesign). I can't remember who he worked for before, but I think it was Alfa Romeo.
Plus, it's only the Impreza where Subaru screwed up this time. The new Legacy and Forester are gorgeous machines.
Either way, this looks nice enough now where I'll strongly consider this instead of the 8.

Subaru really needs to hook up with some better designers.
I agree the Subaru's are wonderful, but design is currently the thing what sells cars (Mini. Audi TT, PT Cruiser). If they are not going to make their cars sexier they will gradually loose out. I think the RX-8 has sex appeal!

i simply can't understand this, and you're all car guys, so tell me:
HOW THE @(*# IS THE PT CRUISER CONSIDERED ATTRACTIVE???
ya, retro "styling cues", a POS engine, all stuck on a Neon chassis... i've sat in one, drived one, and i dislike, an awful, awful lot...
please explain. brain confused.
Ya got a choice. Either a boxy character-less mini-van with a POS engine stuck on a Neon chassis, or something with a little character and chrome with a POS engine stuck on a Neon chassis. Between the two...

Well I've read that the PT Cruiser has good utility features inside.. Styling is subjective... But the fact it's based on a Neon chassis/engine just blows my mind.. Especially since it's almost double the price?
ah, my friend Quicklude, let me introduce you to Supply and Demand... i'm an econ major
ya, sucks, but the way the whole thing works... i'd buy one only if it was a tiny bit more than a Neon, and i had a tiny bit more money that would be needed to buy a Neon
Im confused about the whole radiator/intercooler thing. If i remember correctly i thought the radiator was all the way in front of the engine like it is on most cars, and the intercooler was right behind the hoodscoop. Yes, im pretty sure the intercooler was on top of the engine taking air directly from the hood scoop. Is this what you guys have been saying all along?
For the road car, the intercooler is on top, the rally car, I belive the intercooler is in front.
The funny thing about the car is that the front end is so much more agressive than the rest of the car. It actually looks really strange without the wing on the back.

yep. That's how it goes. The older WRC cars (pre 99) had a top mounted intercooler, just like the street cars, but with the WRC2000 car, they moved it to the front.
I saw other pictures of an impreza face lift with Is 200 style tail lights and different front lights in EVO magazine. What happened to that one? I thought it looked much better than that one.

That was a photoshop job based on speculation. The pics in this thread are the real deal. Sorry!
