That is all.
We have Dell & Lenovo (IBM) at work. The Dell's are OK, but the IBM's (Thinkpad T series) are better. I agree, don't go HP/Compaq.
BTW, I provide Deskside Computer Support. If my client a problem with their equipment, it is my job to get it working again. I see laptops that have been dragged all over the world.

Don't get a DELL. Right now I have an HP and have had 0 problems with it. The reason other people say HP sucks is that they have "horrible" customer service. Like I said I have had 0 problems so I have never had to call CS. IBM is probably the best notebook, but aesthetically they are not at the top of the list. Also don't get any brand X notebook either.
My Company is all dell and they are great. Coming from itt tech there is nothing wrong w/ dells. i would stay away from hp and compaq. get a dell good price reliable computer. or get a sony ibm hell macs are getting pretty awesome

Everyone always bitches about Dell, but I've got a Dell M90 and it's wonderfull. We got it because my husband has been using one for work for over a year, and never had any issues. I use it for my school development work and WoW mostly. It's a bit more than $700 (mine was $1200, and that was almost $1k off) but they are being phased out, so they're getting lower and lower.
what are you looking to do on the machine? That will help people give you better suggestions.
I will be using it for school work in college, internet, and maybe a small amount of gaming every now and then. I would like a fast processer, and a good bit of memory, but I don't need anything extra fancy.
well if you're a typical college kid and dont have a lot of money (like me lol) HP / Dell is the way to go. I bought my HP a year ago for my first year at college and its been great. Sony is also very nice but costs a bit more. Go to like Best-Buy or Circuit-City and read the reviews on some of the notebooks; they will tell you which companies people like and which to stay away from...
Notebooks are getting cheap nowadays... I recommend i minimum of 2GB RAM and 2ghz Processor
^I have never really looked at an Sony or IBM. But i have played around with a few apple's, and am still very iffy about if I like them or not. They are very trendy, as well as very expensive. But i dont really like the way it operates. I guess it's just something you have to get used to.
stay away from sony. my sister and bro-in-law both have vaios. The sound from my bro's was sometimes garbled, and i didn't really like the tactile feel of the keys on my sister's vaio.
i just handed down my hp to my other sister a few weeks ago. the only problem i had with that was battery life, otherwise it was good to me. i now have a macbook pro and i love it so far.

^ yeah same here... batt. life on HP's arent the best but thats the ONLY problem i have had with it. I have the 2.0 GHZ / 2GB RAM and batt. runs down in 1 hour
Also check out Toshiba...
PS - the new vaios are actually really solid, powerful comps. The old ones... aren't.
But i dont really like the way it operates. I guess it's just something you have to get used to.
It took me a few months to get fluent with my mac; however, it is a high quality computer with excellent reliability. It has not given me trouble once. I would recommend it for that.
Dells rock for what they cost. Just get their complete care warranty.
I used to be a dell service tech. I once had a call where "some fat bitch" poured a glass of water into a guys Latitude D610. We replaced the keyboard, motherboard, processor, ram and palmrest for him free of charge.
A coworker of mine replaced a laptop with a bullet hole through the display. A true bullet proof warranty.
As long as you get the complete care.
Personally, my laptop of choice is Fujitsu, but they're bank.

Don't get Compaq. Other than that....you can look for one that fits your need and falls into your price range. It doesn't matter what brand you get, as long as you maintain your computer regularly (clean out junk files/folders, spywares, virus, etc,..), it will last atleast like 10 years...lol
I have had several different laptops and PCs in past 17 years....compaq, Hp, IBM, Sony and Fujitsu.
Beside Compaq, I have had great experience using all. My Sony laptop lasted 8 years and never given me any trouble. I made sure I did regular junk/spyware cleaning and virus scan every two weeks. My IBM PCs lasted 10 years.
Now I've been using HP laptop and PC that I built for about 4 years and yet to have any problem...
My first PC was Compaq and it broke down and unfixable within a year. My friend bought a compaq laptop like a year ago and it already slower than my 4 yr old HP. And he's been having a lot of issues with it eventhough he has wiped out his harddrive and reinstalled the OS like 4 times.
My favorites are Sony and Levono(IBM)..........but they're (ofcourse) more expensive than other brands.........so....i guess it leaves you with either Dell or HP. o........there's that.......Gateway........I don't know much about that brand though since I never have owned one..

I don't think you can get any new Apple laptop for $800 and under...........then again...I'm not sure since I've never owned an apple in my life.... .....
If you just want to use the laptop for e-mail/internet and some word processing, I think you'll be fine with a dell or a Hp............
