I am seriously considering selling my RX-7. That would leave me rotaryless for the first time in about 13 years. The scariest part is I don't have any plans to replace it. I'm getting married in April and have other things to think about. The car needs lots of work. Not so much money. Just time. With rising gas prices I also don't have any motivation to work on cars anymore. The fun is gone. I'm not playing with them anymore. I'm not testing things anymore. I'm not building little things anymore. In general, I'm doing nothing car oriented anymore. I don't even post a whole lot now.
I'm still not sure if I am going to sell it or not but for the first time, I'm considering being without a rotary. I don't have any intentions of rebuilding the flowbench or testing other ideas anymore. I'm just letting them go. We'll see. Maybe my interests are changing for good or maybe it's just at a lag phase. Maybe I should just get my happy butt outside and work on my car. I don't know but I've never thought this way since I've been into rotaries. I have no intentions of getting into other cars either. If anything my car interests have shifted to another form of rotary, the electric motor. I am really interested in a series hybrid idea as every parallel hybrid on the road today, which is all hybrids, are done improperly and are a complete waste of time. I thought it would be fun to build a car that would make a Prius look like a gas guzzler and do it with half the parts. I don't know. It's possible but it all goes back to time.
I seem to be shifting my priorities towards saving money for a house. One of us is going to have to move jobs and the uncertainty of that also has finances on my mind. After I get the house, I know I'll be working on it for a while. I really have no idea when I'll have time for the car yet alone any fun research projects that I've always done. Who knows? Maybe my rotary days are coming to an end. On the other hand, maybe my second rotary coming is just around the corner. We'll see. I'm not gone yet. I'm not even sure if I'm going back to Sevenstock this year. We'll see. I will say one thing though, I'm helping with a rotary book that will be out in the near future (hopefully this year sometime) but you'll have to wait to see what that is all about as I've already divulged too much.
Will I stay or will I go?

saving money for a house seems to be a common factor in giving up cars. in the bigger picture, you could sell it and comeback later if you ever feel the need. a house is the right thing to go for. i would just take some time off from cars and maybe sell the 7 and see if in the future you want to come back.
Fred,, material things are just that, material things. If it is necessary to let them go to move forward in life, then say goodbye. They can be replaced later when the occasion arises.
Friends are the things one should not ever let go.
Does this mean instead of calling you "Rotarygod", we'll just have to call you "God"?

I had a vegetarian stage in 7th grade but that didn't take me out of the 48 oz club at Schulas Steakhouse. Your already a rotary head, even if you kill it for a while because of other issues.
You could sell your 7 but I'll be damn surprised if you don't someday have a taste for steak again.
Who says I don't have an engine on a test stand that I can't fire up whenever I want? I have more rotary parts in storage than most of you have on your entire cars!

Than sell your stand engine and your stock of parts and keep your 7.
Screw with the 13b when you feel like some meat. Which you will, or else you'll get thin from trying to make up for it with fruits and veggies. And TOFU. You want TOFU?? If you want TOFU, sell your 7.
Even if you're moving on in your life, with family, house, finances ect.....you should definitley keep the 7. there will be regrets, and as you mentioned "time". As time goes by you're going to look back and say "damn, i wish i had my rx7 still....but oh well..*tear* if there is no money going into it right now, just might as well keep it, then letting it go... Even if it is your last and only rotary , definitley keep it- [sentimental.?? maybe not now, but later you will reckon]
good luck.

I'd say unless it's the kinda thing that will be "make or break" the deal. Here's the biggest question... do you see yourself wanting to get one in the future, and if you do, would you be willing to move on to another or miss the one you have now? If you arent too worried about having one at all, or dont mind parting with this specific one, then go ahead and sell. If you think that one is what you'd be looking for in the future, and think you'll end up wanting one just like it, then keep that one if you can.
From the posts I've read, you're quite passionate about cars and rotaries. Even with the rotary parts... driving's still part of it. I sometimes get distracted from things I love/love doing but in the end I end up going back to them.
This isn't about money. It's not costing me anything by sitting there and I can't get much for it anyways. Not enough to matter. I'm also not being pressured by my fiancee. I'm just sick of working on them. I have no drive to go outside and do anything to it. I used to relax by working on my cars. I thought it was fun. Now it's an inconvenience and I just get really pissed off. The fun is gone. That's what this is about. It's not about money.

Have you messed with 13B-REN yet? It's much different from the 13B-REW, as you know better than me. Since you don't have an 8 you sound like you might now have a Renny to mess with. The 13B gets boring after a while.
I always enjoyed knowing the extremes of things, just how far they could go. I would suggest getting a REN and pushing that to the limits just like you probably have done with the REW. Or get a 20B and drop it in your 7.
It sounds like you've had Top Sirloin for a long time. Try some New York Strip or a ribeye.
Too bad this isn't the Matrix where I can just download you brain into mine for rotary knowledge...
I know the feeling though... Just take a break from it for a while and maybe someday you will rekindle your relationship .. Instead of Ky.. Try some 5w30

If that's the case... hold onto it for a bit. I know I sometimes get bored of things but in the end I go back. You've worked with these so long, you might have burnt yourself out.

Your sick of it pretty much.
headaches here and there.
It used to take your frustrations away and away to vent out, but now it frustrates you and you cant vent out with the problems you have with it. besides cursing at it and hitting it with a mallet. lol[rubber mallet of course haha]
but i say you neeeeeeed a LONG VACATION, just you and your Fiance. Get out of the states, its time for a Change of State.
sell the 7, get an 8, and come to our autox meet rotary god!... save tat 7, maybe i'll buy it from u in a year, it'd be like buying a legend lol.

Just to give you an idea of what I'm facing to get the car running again. Oh yeah, it's an '84 1st gen GSL-SE. I pulled out EVERY single wire in the car. I have slowly been rewiring it with an American Auto Wire kit. It's a very nice kit and I have been looming every wire individually with vinyl sleeves. It doesn't look any nicer than that. All wires are running out of sight through fenders. This aspect still has a long way to go before it's done. It's just tedious. The ecu is out of the car and is going to get a new one. The fenders, hood, bumper, etc are all off of the car and are in various stages of primer and paint. All of the trim is off of the car. The entire a/c system has been removed. A new Vintage Auto Air system is waiting to go back in. The front subframe is waiting to be replaced with a new one. The rear end is waiting for the 5 link conversion. The exhaust is off and needs to be fabbed back up. A Turbo II transmission is waiting to be installed. New Tokico struts are sitting in their boxes. After all of this gets done, the intention is to install a Renesis and completely rebuild the interior. I haven't even gotten into the body kit details.
Now that all may sound nice and fun but that's just it, the fun is gone for me. I don't look forward to working on it. It's been sitting out in pieces rusting away. I have everything to put it back together except the motivation. I just don't care. That's why I'm considering getting rid of it altogether. I'm not enjoying it. I don't tinker with cars like I used to. I always find some excuse to not work on it. It just takes up space. I'm really a 2nd gen person at heart anyways. The problem with owning an RX-7 is that it is a foregone conclusion that they ALL need lots of work. Those that supposedly don't just haven't realized it yet. I don't want to work on them anymore. I either want to drive them or not have them. It's that simple. My drive (pardon the pun) is gone. I've got other things I'm thinking about.
I haven't thrown in the towel yet. I'm just quickly approaching that point. Maybe I'll just treat working on it like a workout schedule at the gym. Keep in mind I can't keep to that either! I just need to tell myself that every Friday or whenever, I will work on it from 5-8 pm or something like that. A little progress is better than none at all. Maybe if I did this, as it got farther along my motivation would return. It doesn't help that I don't have a garage to work in. The weather here sucks.

sad to hear, but these things happen. you dont seem to be in a rush to get rid of the 7 which is good, just in case. but hobbies, lifestyles, and interests die out eventually. either way you've done alot just for us here, and i dont even know about anything prior to my time. we should all thank you for that and be happy for you in whatever decision you make.

I saw a close friend of mine go through much of the same situation with his Evo VIII, although a totally different car, his inability to decide on parts and to work with what was proven resulted in tons of work with very little to show for it. In the end, he ended up going with a much lower power setup and calling it quits. He still has the car but doesn't do much more than change the oil on it.
I can certainly see how someone can get burned out on this stuff. Thankfully I don't work on cars as a career because after fixing other people's stuff the last thing I would want to do is fix my own car. Working in the IT business I have people asking me to fix their computers all the time. I spend my whole day doing that, and when I get home I'd prefer to use a working one!
RG, I'd say that perhaps it's more of a case of finding a different direction with cars. What really influences me is the community. I'm VERY lucky to be able to work with people like MazdaManiac, Easy_E, Chickenwafer, and also Ray Hill from time to time. Arizona has a huge rotary following and working with these people has made the community aspect worthwhile. I doubt I would be into my rotary nearly as much if there wasn't anyone around to share it with.
I've found projects more fun with company. Sometimes it's cool to work on your own cause it's at your own pace and what YOU want to do. Still, mixing in other people with a few beers and some laughs can make the difference. Some of my most fond memories here in Phoenix are working on cars.
I'd hate to see you leave the rotary community. Posts like yours have helped myself and no doubt others better understand the engine and it was technical information here on RX8 club which captivated me and got me excited about the rotary. I really had no idea what I bought but the more I learned the more interested I became.
I've got 2 years of rotary owning experience, a far cry from over a decade you have. Your project is quite a large one and one which won't get done overnight. Still, the payout would be awesome...imagine rolling that baby to sevenstock!
If anything, stick with it cause of the people involved. My philosophy is that cars are not as cool unless you have people you can share them with.
aww.. 1st gen.. my heart is with the FC too... good luck with it RG >.<...you know what you needa do, start a "project" thread on it so we can bug you and you can show off the work while u go lol..
