Marvin's Mystery Oil = "mineral spirits, 30 wt oil, red dye & wintergreen fragrance."

Marvel Mystery Oil was analyzed by one of Exxon's chemists. Description follows:

"MMO contains mineral spirits, 30 wt baseoil, red dye and wintergreen fragrance."

you can read more about other kinds of oils, additives, and Ed Kollin, the chemist, here:

Nice. Red dye and wintergreen fragrance. mmmmm

What about maple syrup?

Funny, I would have expected it to be 100% pure snake oil.

Sorry or the bump, but I dipped my finger in MMO an hour ago and just scratched my elbow... Now the ****** burns. I'll remember to wash my hands before I pee. Don't want that burning pee sensation I had a few years back with peppers again... Wait... What?

"Marvel Mystery Oil -- which is basically a thin, petroleum-based solvent to which red food coloring and perfume has been added -- does seem to have some value in freeing up sticky hydraulic-valve lifters when added to the oil and it almost certainly does no harm. However, I wouldn't recommend using it on a regular ongoing basis (in the absence of audible valve-lifter clatter), and I certainly would discourage anyone from adding it to avgas (as opposed to oil). "

I guess I'm at a loss of why this is bad news? Isn't MMO basically being used (for those that use it) as a cleaner and some other additive as a lubricant? I've been using it and Lucas Oil FT as my premix.. Lucas for lubricity and MMO as the cleaner.. or am I wrong?

Because it's snake oil.

Sounds to me like it really doesn't do much of anything. Stopping lifter clatter is something I suppose, but we don't have lifters, and I bet there are other things that could do the job better if we had them, like not abusing your car till the lifters fail in the first place.

I wonder what effect a solvent has on the oil film that protects our rotor housings and apex seals from wear. It sure can't make it thicker.

Yeah right next thing they will scientifically analyze the renesis engine, and tell the world its composition: 3 ladybugs running on a small treadmill.

4oz spilled out of my MMO bottle today. Good thing most of it was in the bag I put the MMO in. My trunk smells like wintergreen now and so do my hands. My thumb burns too.
