Okay...so as a present to myself this year, I am thinking of getting a new computer. However, the problem that I face is that I am thinking of getting a Mac...maybe an iBook or something.
Now, I've always been a PC guy...I know enough about PCs to build my own, do my own thing with it. With Macs, it will be a whole new world.
I primarily want to use the Mac for video editing, which I heard is the best solution since it's so reliable. I have yet to see a Mac crash, unlike my dual Athlon 1800+, which crashes everytime I try to compile something.
Since there is a vast majority of you out here, what do you guys think?
Macs? PCs?

You wanna do media type stuff? the Mac would be better... those Macs are solid rocks too.
BUT... MACs are usually quite a bit more money and if your video editing is just for fun/hobby you may want to think about if your hobby is worth the extra cash... maybe it is... maybe it isnt... but you'll have to think about that.
It comes down to personal preference. My preference is for things not to crash all the time and generally work like they are supposed to so I bought a Mac. Every PC I have ever had eventually degraded into a buggy, slow, piece of infected crap. I have heard that losing the right click on the mouse is devastating for some pc users making the switch but all you have to do is press the ctrl button on the keyboard of a mac and it does the same thing. They are really very similar in presentation otherwise. However, my G4 laptop is sexier than any pc you will find.
It's the best, most detailed review I've seen of the new iMac G5, which is a beautiful machine. It also serves as a pretty comprehensive primer of what the Mac OS is all about, comparisons between Macs and PCs, and stuff like that. Definitely worth a read if you're considering a Mac.
id take a mac for video editing but for gaming and what not I'd chose a PC. PCs dont always degrade into a buggy mess if you dont buy crap like dells or compaqs and you know how to maintain your comp.
For gaming & download I would take a PC (if you are looking at laptops preferably the IBM Thinkpad). The one thing I really don't like about the ibooks are the keyboards. Great if you get the 12.1" screen, small units. But they literally use the same keyboard if you get the large 17" screen version. The keyboard feels too cramped for me. You have a 1800+ AMD processor, try a new one 3200+ and I don't think you will have the crashing problem. Viruses are a problem for PC's, so get yourself a good anti virus. It's not that viruses don't work on mac's, it's just that if you were creating a virus, and wanted to affectt he most people, you would never design a mac virus. They have about 7%-8% of the market. That is not large. Wouldn't you rather affect the other 90%+ ?
One of the things that I hated when I went to Fry's Electronics to "play" on a mac was the missing right button on the mouse. Man!!! It just feels so uncomfortable...I think that whole one click thing on the Mac is when the entire mouse moves down. I like the button thing.
I have heard many things about the virus issue as well. Macs seem like they're harder to be "infected" than a PC. It's really a toss-up for me...I grew up with PCs, worked with PCs, and played with PCs. Macs are literally a whole new world for me.
my pc with windows is always crashing. i heard mac. never crashes. its used to be ibm compadable computers had all the programs because it was easy to write for pc. but now-a-days you buy a program and it has both pc and mac compadable software. the only thing now to deter from the mac would be the price. yes it is a lot more then pc but you don't have do deal with all the problems of windows (thank you Bill).
and another thing. Bill Gates was working for Apple designing the Macintosh when he started Microsoft. in fact, Apple sewed Microsoft for copyright infringment.
I can't stand macs- I've been using on for work for the past 5 years, and it is the buggiest, most annoying computer I have ever dealt with. Nothing is intuitively where it should be. I don't know where you guys are getting macs don't crash- half the time it won't open things it should, the rest of the time it's locking up on me for no reason. I love my pc- we've built the last 3 I've had from scratch, and the only reason I say 3 is that we've changed out pieces so many times in the last 8 years to upgrade it.
I don't know what all this windows bashing is all about. I have used a Mac once and didn't like it. But I hve never had problems with Windows, it doesn't crash all the time. In fact, the only problems I have ever had with a computer are hardware related, nothing to do with windows. I think a lot of people don't know how to take care of their computers.

Elara, which version of the Mac OS are you using? If it is OS 9 then I can understand why you would dislike Macs so much, it was a buggy, crash prone OS that offered few if any advanyages over Windows. However Mac OS X is a completely different story, it is exceptionally stable, doesn't suffer from a constant stream of spyware and viruses (one reason for this is that Macs are less popular than pC's and so it doesn't make as much sense to write viruses and spyware for them, another reason is that OS X's Unix core is simply more secure than Windows and less vunerable to attack), is amazingly easy to use, allows even idiots like myself to easily set up multiple network connections on the same machine that run at the same time, provides you with astounding multi-media tools at no extra charge that couldn't be beat on a PC no matter how much money you put into them. I still have to use PC's from time to time, but I try to avoid it as much as possible as they are simply more trouble than they are worth now and since OS X allows me to be so much more productive.
However, I wouldn't recommend a Mac for everyone, as has been stated before, if your primary use of a computer is gaming then don't buy a Mac, you will be disappointed, if you have to use a specific piece of software to get your job done that isn't available on a Mac then you shouldn't buy one. Many software titles are available for both platforms, Word, Powerpoint, Excel, but if you have to use Access you are out of luck, more or less, on a Mac. Also keep in mind that while Macs and PC, on a feature by feature basis, are very close in price with Macs often times being the cheaper choice, you may have to buy several pieces of software to go along with a new Mac wgich can mean a larger investment than you would have to make with a new PC.
Neither platform is perfect for everyone, but I find Macs are much better for what I do and how I do it. Use this test to make your decision and on't let any of the zealots sway you.
Well...I do know how to take care of my computer. I run spyware checks, virus checks, and do just the little things that keep it going. It's all a part of a routine, but for some reason, it still crashes on the big things. Things like video editing or really extreme multi-tasking.
I wonder if I can get a mac with a two button mouse...cause that single click mouse makes me go crazy!
In this day and age where the main reason to have a computer at home is to go on the Internet and download music (or pr0n, or both) with an occassional spreadsheet or word processing document, a Mac or IBM-compatible PC would work out equally well. In fact, the Mac would probably work out better because they don't fall prone to all the spyware / advertising trojans / virii that Windows PCs are so succeptable to.
However, if you're one to go into a computer store and look into buying new software, chances are that 90% of the stuff on the shelves are Windows-based and will not have a MAC OS equivalent.
Also, due to a more competitive market in IBM-compatible hardware and software, such merchandise will generally be lower in price and more readily available than their MAC equivalents.
If Apple decides again to stop being so elitist about their design and implementation standards, perhaps MACS will become more popular among the general public. As it goes, only Apple makes Macintosh computers, so you won't have such luxuries as walking into an electronics store and buying a new neon acrylic case and motherboard, etc. unless it was an Apple (or affiliated company) product.

Otherwise, go Sun / Sparc / Alpha / Solaris / Linux / abacus / ETC and create your own world of worry.

oh boy - i love how the single mouse thing lingers in peoples minds as a problem. ANY mouse in teh world will work with a mac...even microsoft ones. You can get a 5 button mouse with 2 scroll wheels if you want.
I am so glad somone chimed in about OS X. I find it far superior to Windows in every way.
Apple got a bad rap in the 90s as being strictly for the graphics world, and very prone to crashing. It is SO far from being so in the present day. I use 3 computers with OS X and they never EVER crash, and that's with them being on 24/7. Any program I would ever need is on the Mac platform.
Sure I use a PC too, but only becasue my job requires it in small form. But it would never be my primary computer. Hopefully all the PC haters can stop brainwashing the world on how their precious XP is the best thing since sliced bread, when in fact their system is more prone to crashes and viruses than OS X will ever be.
I was switched to OSX a year ago. No help at all. Still hate it, still locks up on me constantly, and the only thing I can do is restart it. And it's not just me, because our Mac guy keeps checking it and can't figure out what's wrong.

It probably needs the new G5 flash, along with case, motherboard, video card, memory, magneto drive, optical drive, power supply, keyboard, mouse, etc.etc.etc.
